When i installed this motor, I had the rear main bearing cap off, and saw that the bearing was worn. I put the motor in anyway. I told myself several years ago that I would never again install a used drivetrain component without rebuilding it first, no matter what. This after installing a used T14 that had junk bearings. It was in the Jeep for two days before I pulled it back out for a rebuild.
This now applies to engines as well. Never, ever install a used major component without rebuilding it first. Any used drivetrain/ powertrain component should be considered a core, IMO.

    :iagree:

I always at least open them up and go through them before using them unless I know the person I got it from... And most of them I help them with the rebuild so I know what it's like anyhow.

I have a tranny, tcase, OD on the bench I am going through now for my niece.

    Fun, fun, fun!

I like assembling engines. Very satisfying.

    Jeep is back together, but......................
Still has a bad engine vibration. Maybe worse than before. The rods are quiet, for now.
Not sure what to think. I almost put a different flywheel on it, but I put the same one back in....What could go bad with flywheel balance? This (I think) is the flywheel that was on this engine when I pulled it out of the other Jeep...

I had a 225 flywheel someone put a neutral balance on (for a 231) and I didn't realize it. Damn near shook the jeep apart. I have put OF Flywheels on 231s and not had them shake so bad. Just something to check.

I have a flywheel I pulled off a 231 EF that was in a CJ5. I've assumed it was a 225 wheel someone put on the 231. It looks just like the wheel in my Jeep. I have another, that looks the same, except it has 3 or 4, 1/2" or so diameter holes drilled in one edge.
How do you tell if a 225 wheel has been neutrally balanced? Was there ever a heavy 231 EF flywheel?

I ended up taking it to a machine shop - they then redid it for the 225 crank.

I have a even-fire 231 flywheel from a 81 t-type that came with a 4-speed, and it has about ten holes in it to balance it. It only weighs about 30 lbs. I can check the pile of 225 flywheels tomorrow cause I am at work today.
