The inside of my JC whitney unit is about 12.5 front to back, 10.5 left-right, 6.5 top to bottom. It probably cost about $12 + shipping back in the day. I like it because the deep pocket shape keeps things from falling out. When my jeep was my daily driver, I crammed all kinds of stuff in there. The old factory cardboard box was not made to last. When I would open the lid all my carp would fall out onto the floor board. Stuffing it back in became a ritual. The plastic box solved that problem.

I have flatty glove box envy. (It has none). My absolute favorite is the A1 with the box on the driver side where you need it.

Agreed 100%. On top of being on the driver's side, it's HUGE.

    No.
Tires, rear axle, transmission all shot.
I need to bite the bullet and take the Sm465 in to a shop. I need to toss the axles along with for the 4.27 gears and new bearings.

I can forget about working on the jeep myself for a few weeks.

Month later, absolutely 0 progress. I haven't even ordered the led light for the glovebox. It still sits where the last picture was taken. I need to itemize a list of supplies for the front and rear axles. I'm really tempted to throw in a front locker if I'm pulling it out anyway for the 4.27 gears.

It's been a while since I did a motivational list:
    Finish the Glove box.
Move the Saginaw bracket forward on the frame.
I need a waterproof relay housing with a few fuses for the TBI system.
The Q-jet air filter housing needs a bit of clearancing for the tps sensor to clear without the filter spacer.
Corner guards, tail lights, side reflectors need finished.
New mufflers and exhaust tlc, I think the exhaust leaks are affecting the O2 readings.
front shock mounts, spring plates, and shocks
Tires... one wheel is a slow bald leaker.
    D25 and D44 rebuilds with 4.27 gears.
    Body mounts.
    Sm465

Long shot... Cage and 3 point seat belts.
    Tj rear tank.

Widening the frame rails? The TJ tank is considerably wider than the space between the rails.

    Dang it.
The in-laws jeep has a driver side fill rear tank...
Trying to do the same and have dual tanks with fillers on the same side.
I've done under seat driver/passenger tanks. I've also had a fuel station in the bed for the farm. I absolutely hated moving the jeep to get the 2nd tank with the nozzle on the ground.

Some YJs had a narrower tank with a driver's side fill that should fit: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/shi-042spc-jp1e?rrec=true

Is there any reason why someone couldn't add a m38a1 dash to their cj5? I've always liked the military dash, especially how you can pull out the guages as a batch. I'd love to have a real battery box on the cowl too.

This guy has an early CJ5 cage in his listing. Actually he has a lot of old Jeep parts-see his other listings. The roll cage is about the second picture over. It will need to be tied to the frame, maybe some gussets added. But it is a starting point. He is in Fayetteville, not terribly far from you.

I built mine from parts sourced from Smittybilt. They no longer offer anything, most likely due to liability.

It's gonna be really hard to hide that, unless I can find "jungle gym blue" and tie it to the swingset.
Jpet's die is actually in KC so I can get the tight top bow radius prebent then notch and weld myself.

Another factor is that the body stretch is not out of the question, just not at the top of the list. So my cage will be interesting.

Mostly heater, parking brake, and guage issues.
I think I might have seen a custom dual glovebox dash posted in a build here.

This subject came up with Blalp! a few weeks ago while we were turning wrenches. The A1 dash panel will match perfectly to the CJ5...bolt for bolt. You'd need to cut the pre-64 CJ5 spot welds from the faux battery box lid and buy plenty of pricey parts, like the dash panel, battery box latch and hinge, battery box and bottom, support brackets, glove box sheet metal, glove box door, lock, cluster panel, zues fittings, gauges and several other more minor etcetera's. Totally doable with time and some dollars. If it were me, I'd reserve 1/2 the battery box real estate for a good hydronic heater I'd I were going through all that trouble but it would be cool! Couple of things are somewhat hard to find. Write if you want to go for it, I can help....Pete

My 54 A1 has the cane e-brake in the stock spot for CJ5. I didn't do it and I bought it like that years ago. I guess what I'm saying is that it's doable.

Hahaha Pete I just want my jeep to run and move and stop. New brake lines and master going on this week, so part of that will be accomplished. I think if I ever did a m38a1 dash, it would be as part of a very resto-modded TJ/Cj6, similar to the cj66 concept. I think that'll be a retirement project.

Good to know it would work though!

Personally I don't like the m38a1 dash, hangs down too low. I'm also blessed with a welded on dash.

It's exactly the same shin bashing height as the CJ5 I'm sorry to report. Take if from someone who's over 6' and owned both.....
