hello everyone, just bought a 69 jeepster, didn't know what i was getting into but for $300 what the heck. looks like its all there and seems solid. has a pickup top but the # says it was a convertible. got it running tonite, the clutch cable or something is stuck, I'll look at that next weekend. I was just wondering if some of you more experienced jeepster owners could tell me what to look for before I get to deep into this project. any advice would be great

    The adventure begains:)

The cable for your clutch is a common prob.
I like the switch to hyd. myself.

Most of your drivetrain is common to the cj 5 and 6.
So there is a ton of good info here.

But for specific Jeepster stuff this site is a very helpful.
    forums.off-road.com/jeepster-american-jeepster-club

Something's are jeepster only like the springs.
You should decide what your jeepster is for( onroad, offroad etc. ) before jumping in to lots of mods.

Depending where it originally came from check it good for rust, especially the frame. Then check for more rust. Pictures would be good :). Is it an 8701 or an 8702 vert? What are your plans for it, restoration or off roader?

X2 on the rust. Floorpans, rocker panels, tailgate and the frame around the spring perches are all likely suspects.

    Oh, and :uwop:

I already bought chiltons manual, but i'm not happy with it. Impossible to read wiring diagram. Are the other ones better? Couldn't find a build date on door jamb, did find the # under the hood. 8702017 50013. The frame looks good, but the body is hiding lots of rust under bondo. The spring perches are solid but the tailgate is swiss cheese. My plans are to use it off road for now with possibly more plans in the future.

If you're looking a manual you want the old service manual, you can find them many places such as: http://www.thejeepsterman.com/shopexd.asp?id=96 (scroll down) and you can find them for better prices on eBay. By the way, what condition is your top in, just out of curiousity? I'm wondering if you have the same sort of rust as mine...

It doesn't look to bad ,for $300.00 bucks you can't expect too much. Half cabs are somewhat rare and very desirable. After you see some that have been fixed up
they grow on you and become a labor of love .To me with the top off in the summertime they are great fun to drive and head turners. I had one 30 years ago and wished I'd kept it,now within 1 year I've bought 3 ,one restored ,one I torn down and just painted ,almost ready for the new motor and clutch and the third one just for parts, etc.

I finally got some time to play with my jeep today, took the clutch cable out and gave it some penetrating oil,got it to move a little bit and worked it back and forth a million times until it was lubed all the way through. put it back in and it works! drained the tranny, x-fer,front and rear axle. hopefully I'll get them filled up tommorow and I might take this thing for a spin next weekend, not to fast though, the brakes need some attention.
Yes I did get the registration, last time it was registerd was 1979, thats a little scary.
the top seems to be in good condition a little surface rust and 2 layers of paint falling off.
    thanks for everyones input. :)

on that clutch cable, working some grease through the housing once in a while will help extend the life of it.

check the front drive shaft, only owned one of these, if it is like mine, should have a 2 piece front drive shaft, long shaft and a short shaft with a carrier bearing, short shaft was where my prob was, carrier bearing went bad, its pressed on then the yoke is welded on, if it goes bad you have 3 choices replace the short shaft either new or find a good used one, $350 18 years ago for a new one, get the #'s off bearing and go to the machine shop, or #3 sell the jeep, my choice was #3

My 69 manual tranny has a one piece D/S.
And I am pretty sure it was the Auto version that had a 2 piece.
Have seen that replaced with a one piece as well.

I am guessing now that the 2 piece had to do with tranny pan clearance.
Smaller dia. shaft probably gets around that.

All V6 used a two piece whether standard or auto because of the Y pipe.

Hey I like it. I also like the half cab. For $300 that is a good deal. It will probably be about 10X that to get her right but hey. These do seem to be coming back into the good jeep status again. I like mine, not sure but what I have heard is that they are on CJ6 frames. It is a better ride than my CJ5. I have had a ton of people ask me what it was. I have left this one bone stock except for the HEI upgrade. It makes a world of difference.Parts seem to be a little harder to find. Good luck with yours!
