With the way that gear has bounced 9 out of 10 times (in my past) there were problems with the synchros and needle bearings for your 2nd 3rd cluster... Also check 2nd on the main shaft as the tourque can mess with it as well.

Must be a pretty common thing with the T-90's. I got two extra ones with a Jeep i bought this past weekend and the input shafts are trashed in both of them.

The pickups with a T-90 trans had a slightly lower (higher numerical) first gear of 3.44, and a second gear of 1.85 as opposed to the garden-variety T-90s which had the 2.98 and 1.66 1st and second gears. Both versions had a 1.0:1 third gear.

I have no experience with swapping the internals on these transmissions, but it is probably safe to say that just about everything inside the trans would need to be swapped in order to make this swap. It sounds like you are going to need to do this anyway, so do your homework and go for it!

A call to Herm the overdrive guy or maybe Novak would be a good starting point, IMHO.

To change to 3.44 the only things needing to be changed are the input shaft and the cluster gear. Had a 64 CJ-6 that had those gears in it. To much of a rpm drop between 2nd and 3rd. Didn't like it because it felt like a 4 speed that was missing 3rd gear. Didn't go well with the four banger and the grades that I had to ascend to get to favorite hunting and fishing areas. Eventually swapped out the gears to the 2.98 long input shaft when I did a Chevy V-8. conversion.

I've got 2 T-90's sitting in the shed. One out of a 46 2A and one out of a 65 CJ5. Don't know how far away Butler is from Akron but you welcome to come and look.
