Someone help my failing memory... I recall reading a while back that someone was working on (or has) an 11" drum brake kit... was it Herm?

I'm going home in a week and a half, gonna be home for just over a month.

In a perfect world I'd like to have my JEEP rolling again by the time I leave again. Normally I'd say that's a tall order, but for that month I won't be gainfully employed (may moonlight a bit for my dad) and I'll have some spare cash - how many times in your life do you get THAT opportunity? :D

Right now I have the frame essentially ready to go (gonna coat it with some undercoating first, but that will take all of a half hour). I've got springs and hardware ready to go.

Basically I need to get my axles done (for now just sand/paint at least), wheels done (same deal), get some tires and slap it all together. But I figure I can do the brake conversion while I've got it completely torn down, it's gotta be the easiest way to do it...

Shoot me a PM so I don't forget to bug you in a few weeks when I (hopefully) get to that point.

Does he? I've been pouring over his website and not finding anything. That's why I was wondering.

Though looking at the page, the R&P kit was definitely what I was thinking of.

Not entirely necessary, except to compare notes mebbe. Most everything you need is already written up HERE.

Don't know what the R&P kit sells for, but Herm's is $550 for all 4 wheels.

Yeah I kinda figured that was it. I just had a thought lodged in the back of my mind that I had heard he was "working on" the kit or some such, wanted to know if they were for sure available.

At work right now so will maybe call tonight. But I have access to ecj5 right now. ;)

Not trying to take business away from Herm or R&P, but if you're going to be home for a month and have just a little time, you could easily do the conversion for 1/2 those prices.

Start sourcing the backing plate now, so you already have them. All the hardware is available at any parts store. Drums can be had from a junkyard or new. Brakes hoses are also available at Napa.

Just my .02 - $575 for 4 drum brake set-ups is insanely high. I know, I know - free market, people pay it, etc. Just saying one could easily put that kit together for less than $300 with minimal effort and not have to pay shipping.

Nope, $550 for both ends. $275 per axle. If you want all the parking brake stuff on the rear that is extra. Went to lunch with Paul from R&P today and verified price. All parts new or rebuilt with powdercoated backing plates.
Herm may be a little cheaper on shipping, not sure. Nickmil.

The retail price of new drums is about $50 each, so $200 of that kit price is just the drums. If you can find good, used drums that can be turned, your cost will come down a lot. With used drums, you could surely cut the price in half, maybe by even more. However, I don't think you can get the same parts that come in the kit for half the price, particularly since you will have to buy all the new parts at retail.

OK - reality check for you southern guys...drums may be available by you at a junkyard, but around here in MI most yards haven't seen a CJ in years....and if you do find them you'll spend most of a day cleaning the rust off of them and painting them.

My $0.02 is that for brake parts, spend the coin on the new stuff and save the time sourcing the parts and cleaning up the used stuff.

Keep your eyes and ears open for deals. Like I just bought four 11" backing plates off a '76 DJ5 postal Jeep for $40 for all 4, $10 each. Found 'em on craigslist.com. The fronts have some grooves worn in them that I'll have to weld up, but hey, for $40? My 9" brakes are in great shape, so I'm going to run them and take my time getting the 11" stuff together to swap out later on.
