What he said. I know I can save by "keeping my eyes open" and scrounging, but I really don't have the time at this point. I'm home for a month, yes, but a lot of other stuff needs to be done other than the brake conversion. Heck, a lot of other stuff needs to be done other than just the JEEP. And yes, it's worth the extra to me to have brand-spanking new brakes on there. Having suffered both partial and FULL brake loss on my Exploder, I really don't want to go through either again...

Not saying there's necessarily anything wrong with going with used parts, what I'm saying is they take extra time to get them to the safety/reliability level of new. And for what it's worth, I'll part with a couple hundred more to not have to mess with it.

I swear I saw a photo of Herm's kit on his website, but I couldn't find it. Maybe it was elsewhere. But he told me they were complete, you just opened the box and put the entire backing plate assy. on with 6 bolts. Supposedly everything was already assembled on the b/plates. Bolt 'em on, slide on the drums, and hook up the lines. Sounds good anyway.

    8) That would be perfect. An afternoon job instead of a couple weeks of scrounging, buying and cleaning/fixing up.

Ok Just for cost purposes here is what I spent.
    4 new wheel cylinders$ 62.00
    2 Hdw kits ( sprgs etc)$26.00
    2 Self adj kits $20.00
    2 sets of shoes $38.00
    4 new drums $144.00
    $290.00 total
Now the backing plates you will have to source yourself . I ordered the drums and some of the other stuff from Advance auto ONLINE it has to be online not in the store Over 50.00 and shipping is free and they did not have the cheap drums in stock so they automatically upgraded me from the 36.00 drums to the 62.00 drums at no charge. (you have to check the automatic upgrade box for them to do this). Now it gets shipped from different places around the country and it could take a week for it all to get to you but I think $290.00 for a 4 drum swap with all new parts is a goood deal. Also note when I went online to nappa I could not find any brake parts avail. I used a 1975 cj5 as the vehical

Captian CJ - we're on the same page, my friend.

Of course, if I had the money to just buy from Herm or R&P and be done with it - I would...

Oh yeah - Boyink - I forgot about the location thing. I take Jeep yards for granted down here.

I bought used backing plates and drums and got the drums cut, new shoes, hardware kits, new wheel cylinders and spent around $300.00. It made my wife less annoyed to know I was saving money. I also replaced the brake hoses and got new steel lines and the total outlay was less than $500.

I think he means the places where the shoes slide on the backing plates have grooves worn in them from the edges of the shoes. Lots of miles on those backing plates...
