Are there any way to improve the stock heater?

I don't mean to be an *** but I think the route to go is with a coolant heater. Big talk this heater stuff. It must be winter outside of Florida.

I think that IS a coolant heater, Marc. Probably just a worn-out p.o.s.

You might have to take it out and rebuild it. Clean out the mouse nests, have the core hot-tanked at a radiator shop, maybe put in a new motor, remove some rust and re-lube everything, etc.

Castle Rock, eh? Parker here, just up the road.

Where would you get a motor?

There oughta be a 12 step program for JEEP heater believers.

Best thing to do is to go on a search here. There should be some good info on aftermarket heaters; supposedly some of THEM actually heat stuff. There may be some junkyard stuff that you'd find helpful, too. I accepted the cold of JEEP reality years ago, and simply froze many important parts while claiming I was having fun. I don't live in Colorado.

If you are a restorer, no problem. They can be totally restored. If you just need heat, don't waste much time or money on a stock heater.

There's a lot of discouraging words about the stock heaters, what exactly is wrong with them? Can't be the water temp, so do they just transfer heat poorly, or are the fans too weak? Air leakage? Poor design?

There seems to be a lot of options out there, and the Mojave seems to be at the top of the list. Has me rubbin' my chin and thinkin' about it, but I figure I can add a heater anytime later on. It's not a big priority for my rebuild and restoration. I've got this little hummer that came in my Jeep, have no idea what it is or where it came from, but I'm going to try and rebuild it anyway. It's in pretty good shape overall, but I'll be looking for a more powerful motor w/2 or 3 speeds. The Colorado weather will just laugh at it anyway.

The heater core puts out plenty of heat. Its the weaker blower motor that could use an upgrading. I can't remember the exact year I got mine from, but if you want to mess around a little, I put an older Bronco heater from the 60's or 70's(kinda vauge, I know) You need to put a spacer between the blower motor and the housing. Some people say 3/4", I've got 1" and it works good.
Swap the squirrel cage over from the jeep blower. The motor I used was one speed only, so what you do is run 2 wires from the + terminal of the blower. One line goes directly to the high speed switch, the other side gets a BIG wattage ceramic resistor, and a small OHMS value. It was something like 5-20 ohms if I remember.

I certainly appreciate the info. You guys are great. My 67 is primarliy a hunting vehicle. I did the swap with a sm420. The info that talked me into was from this site. What a big diffrence it makes. I aslo did the twin shifters. What a crawler.

FWIW, this isn't the style heater I call a "placebo" heater. I never had good luck with the later more "traditional" style cowl-mounted heater, but then again never tried to upgrade it either. It got tossed in favor of power brakes.

    Binky's home page-heater upgrade

Ah, forgot about that. Stan moved his site awhile back and that link must have been an old one. Here's the one that works now.

i did it to Wimpy way back when i got him but dont remember what year motor we used. pretty sure it was a bronco motor.

anyone know if the bronco or blazer motor works better?
guess i should add bronco vs. blazer. i know both are better than stock.

That heater works great! Many people here have used them with good results. I put one in the Daughter's '70 and like it so much I have one to go in the CJ-6 project.
Might do a search on it for others that have done it and lots of mounting options. I put it on the passenger side in the Daughter's Jeep but some have mounted them up under the cowl above the transmission tunnel.
