Guys (and gals), what are the advantages/disadvantages of using copper tubing.

The nylon tubing I was using, developed a kink that slowed down the reading and prevented the pointer from returning to zero. Should I just replace the nylon tubing or would copper be a better choice.

    Thanks........

I dont think copper will flex enough.
    I'd replace the nlyon tube.
Or go with an electric gauge. ;)

repeat after me, "Just say no to copper tubing on an oil line". or anywhere that will experience vibration for that matter. copper hardens with vibration and over time will crack. $.02

    I'm ok now...

Opinions vary, but I've had good luck with the nylon tube. I covered mine with vacuum hose to protect it. Stewart-Warner will sell you an installation kit with copper or nylon, as I recall.

I used copper for a long time and never had it break. When I reinstalled my oil pressure guage & tubing I made sure it would not break and put a couple coils in it to help with the vibration, similar to the brakelines going to the master cylinder. I also put in a bulkhead connector. If it is nylon it needs to be protected IMO. I had a Jeep many years ago and the PO used nylon tube and it was not protected, oil all over the inside f the Jeep. It happened after I sold it to a friend of mine.

I agree, actually I must be old school and prefer copper. Just take Hansh advice and put a loop at each end. This was standard practice on aircraft for quite a few years.

Braided stainless... A place like Aeroquip can make it up for you and it's really not that expensive

IMO, use copper.... Tie it to the motor with rubber lined clamps, and put a loop in it before it goes thru the firewall.... I had the plastic fail on a three day trip, but i was able to bend it over and melt it shut with a lighter....... I have been running the copper for 5 years now, and I trust it..... The only downside is the copper can work harden and turn brittle, but if you tie it down , and put a loop in before the firewall, you will be fine... IMO, YMMV, etc.

If you are looking for the replacement lines NAPA sells both. I haven't heard complaints about either. Just a matter of personal preference.:)

My experience...electrical short + nylon tubing = big oil mess...:) But only one issue in 19 years of Jeep ownership...not a bad record. And the short was my own dumb fault...3 days before a big trip out west.."what's that thing do anway, let me just pop the cover with a screwdriver......oh (*&*(&"...new fire extinguisher, alternator, regulator and most of an engine wire harness later...

Nylon, really? Not sure how nylon could figure in a short circuit, but I'd like to know so as to protect my own. :)

Nylon tubing wrapped together/tidied up next to electrical wiring. Wire gets hot, bye bye nylon tube.

I've run copper tube in the CJ-5 for the oil pressure gauge since 1990 with no problems with the same piece of tube. Previous to that went through two nylon tubes. YMMV.

Recently i accidentally shorted out my entire starting system except for the battery (don't ask) and i was very irritated that the copper tubing so easily pinched and allowed oil to slowly drip all over the floor. All i had been doing was fiddling with the clusterf*#! of wires behind the ignition cylider and that was all it took. I was shocked to find out how easy the nylon tubing was to run and install. Black zip-ties are my best friend. So far no problems and couldn't be more pleased.
