Yes what @Fireball said, easier to button up one side and adjust the other.
Be sure to torque correctly before and during testing, amazing how much difference 10-15 ft/lbs makes!

Ran into a slight snag. Damn you johnny cash. The axles are 27 splines so I will need to order a new locker. Having a hard time finding a d44 27 lockright.

Are you sure that's not 30 spline?

I wrapped tape around the splines marked and counted. Counted times, wish it were 30.

I was just wondering the same thing....the OP has a D20 with centered output, so I'd guess that the rear axle is an intermediate or later D44, and thus would be a 30spline. Are the axles 1-piece design or nutted 2-piece to the hub?

Do I recall correctly, some of this drivetrain may be out of a jeepster? The jeepster used some odd non-D44 rear axle as some point....maybe its not a D44?

From what I can tell motor/trans/tcase are commando/jeepster. The tcase has the j pattern. But I have no way of 100% knowing what the axles came from. How would I tell if it is a 44? Thanks for the help again and sorry for all this newb nonsense.

On an extremely up note it did incredible this weekend. It went the same places my old 83 with lockers and much lower gearing went just fine.

Thinking you might have a D30 jeepster rear axle? At least as a front axle, the D30 is 27 spline....not sure about the rear axle application.

The cover bolt pattern is a bit different....looks like you have a D30 rear axle

FWIW - I'd take a break and consider what you want to do with it. I would guess there are options for lockers and whatnot for the rear D30 assuming they are the same as front application. But you might also consider the centered 30spline D44 rear axle as found in the 72-75 (and probably even into the later 70s) CJs....The one piece design, stronger (especially if looking at lockers etc), centered pumpkin designed to run behind the D20, and quite common in 3.73 ratio (i think that is what you are running). I am not sure I would put much money into a rear D30....if nothing else, think about it a bit before dropping coin on it.

    Well now we know.

I called Powertrax and the Jeep guy was helpful and gave me a part number that we think should fit. It is already pulled apart and the locker is only a couple hundred so may as well.

I will be on the hunt for a 44 to build and swap out at some point.

In the video he even mention 67 being the first year which is what my front was stamped.

    Honestly…..
Offset tapered D44 axles aren’t rare or expensive….
You might want to consider just finding one now.

    Good catch!
Centered D44's are even stronger than the offset models!
All the more reason to swap now.

Correct. It is center dif with Dana 20.

Fortunately I have a light foot off-road. My old cj5 had a welded d30 up front on 33’s and then 35’s swampers. It took me through sledgehammer back in the day and pretty much everywhere else I pointed it. But I always new it was one blip away from a relaxing hike out.

Now the turbo Miata’s were a different story. I had a habit of breaking transmissions. I always had one or two in deck. If you ain’t first you're last. Haha

Locker came in today and it is in the Jeep. Still need to add oil and road test but it is in.

While I was browsing FBMP a 1967 Commando popped up. Clear as day in the photo is the D30 rear end.

Installed the JB twin sticks today. The process was simple, the hardest part was removing the old shifter unit off the rail. I soaked everything down and ended up using an old steel atv axle and a mini sledge.

All the features are now available. low-fwd, rwd, 4wd. High-fwd,rwd,4wd. And it shift so much easier.

    The old unit.
