After watching videos of NorCal over rocks and knowing he was our leader at Rubicon I ran home and made a skid plate!!

It covers the transmission and bellhousing well but nothing over the oil pan. Yet.

Any simple ideas for oil pan or leave it alone?

Is your Transmission bolted directly to the crossmember, Or does it have a mount / isolator?

Flywheel cover is 12ga. Forgot if the oil pan was lined with 12ga or heavier but all the bottom welds were done off of the pan and it is only welded to the pan up high.

Finally got some help to bleed the rebuilt master cylinder I installed. Pretty immediately the slave cylinder began leaking. New weak link I guess. 1 step forward. 2 steps back.

Just pulled the trigger on a set of 305/70/16 Hankook Dynapro MT2. I'm having a hard time deciding what tires I want to run. The TSL's are probably one of the better mud tires I've ever run but they dig, also they're way taller than I wanted to run on this and more narrow than I'd like. While driving sidehill it felt like I was going to flop and that's not a good feeling. I ordered the wrong size tires when I bought the Federals and the tread wasn't holding up too good to Sicily Island terrain. Fwiw I've seen a brand new set of BFG MT's tear a few lugs off there. Back to the old wobbly Jackmans.

generic online photo. I think they have OWL but we'll see next week.

There is a isolator/regular transmission mount.

I’ve done a lot of stupid stuff, and I’ve never hit my oil pans on anything. They seem to be tucked up behind the axle well enough that the axle itself will judge what gets through. It is too far forward for break over angle to come into play.

I’m sure there’s always an exception, but choose your battles. If you protect everything, you’ll be driving a 6000# armored tank.

The only oil pan issue we had was in a race on a L-134 that had the factory oil pan skid plate. The driveshaft yoke grabbed the side of it and ripped the spot welds out of the pan. There went the oil.

Dad's TJ came with a dented oil pan. I hear about it every time I take it for an oil change.

I remember seeing someone glue a small skid to the oil pan. I could whip up something like that maybe quick enough (We are heading west Saturday). What would someone use to glue/mount like that?

I’d use 100% silicone caulk. Flexible, waterproof, heat resistant, and crazy strong.

I try not to do stupid stuff and I have 3 oil pans (2 sbc and 1 v6) and all 3 have ugly dents and bangs in them - but I am only responsible for the v6 one. The gatekeeper on the rubicon is my nemesis - one of these days i might run it reasonably clean...at the same time, I still don't have an oil pan skid installed so I think you'll be ok....If you decide to make one - what about dropping the pan and plug welding a small skid on the bottom? At one time, i was thinking of looking for a replacement oil pan for mine, and figured I might mess around with trying to weld the skid on before installing...

Got the master cylinder and calipers replaced, rebled the brakes on my brother's CJ7. One step closer to getting this thing out of my garage lol. I also took the repro fender flares I removed off my CJ5 and replaced the front flares that were basically falling off. I'll be doing the rears later I just ran out of gas as I got started on this late and called it quits.

Well I'm down to the last day before a Cross Country Drive. Been a busy week. Rubicon with a Naked oil pan it is.

James, Are you coming to lead me thru GateKeeper? I'm nervous about the whole thing and I got to keep the jeep together for a few weeks in CO after Rubicon. It is running and driving great - My truck is hooked to the camper so I drove it to work this morning.

If you mess your jeep up bad enough that it needs a real repair before the Colorado trip. You can haul it to my shop and we will get you fixed up before you head east.
I would not worry too much about your oil pan..... and gatekeeper is just the prelude to the dream.

Took the hard top off the '69 so it's more fun to drive around this summer:

To be honest, the V8 one. I just love the effortless torque that thing has and the saginaw steering is much better at highway speeds.

I still really like the '69 with the V6 though.

In proper 3b fashion, I bent an old gate hinge and drilled a hole in it for the rollover vent valve. Hopefully, my fuel doesn't spill out on hills now. I can see the light...

Later in the day, I put the windshield down and took the dogs for a ride. They love that:
