I really havent had a chance to introduce myself to the board yet but ive been lurking and learning so much about the cjs. I have a 1992 f-150 with the 300 inline six, borg warner t-4 trans (i think thats what it is, but im not really sure). the tranmission is a four speed with the granny gear. and the transfer case is also made by borg warner. ive looked at some of the numbers on the outside of the case but really cant find anything to tell me much about it.
I would like to put this into my 1975 cj5. I was just wondering what you guys think of that swap. in the jeep right now i have the 304 v-8. and a three speed trans (t-15?) and a dana 20. im really just not sure what to do.

i would think length would be a problem. that I-6 is a long one and these are short nosed jeeps. also sounds like you have a t-18 tranny not a t-4

Yeah, get out your tape measure. Make sure that the Ford transfer case is suitable for that chassis too. As I recall, the Ford cases hang down quite a ways. Check that the CJ chassis is wide enough and long enough to accomodate that TC.

    T4 is a light-duty aluminum cased transmission. You could have a NP435
    http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transmission_gateway.htm ... I think the T18s were finished by 1992.

Why are you unhappy with the 304/T15/D20 drivetrain? Converting to the NP435 with the 304 and Dana 20 transfer case would be a good swap. The 300 is better suited to a Utility truck, Wagoneer or J-truck, where you have more room under the hood.

What Tim said. It should be a New Process 435. If the shifter top is aluminum then it is a 435. Other problems you'll run into using the Ford transfer case is length, It won't fit and still have a rear drive shaft, and the front output is on the left side not the right side like your Jeep front axle so that would have to change. Best bet is to adapt the 435 or find a BW T-18 and adapt to your transfer case. Still make for a short driveshaft but at least you can fit one in. Nickmil.

    Borg-Warner made the T-18 from 1966 through 1989.

its not that im not happy with the 304, but how much i like the 300. the amount of tourqe that comes out of that motor isgreat. i just wanted some input from you guys so i could figure out what my options were. i think now i might try to adapt the the trans to the 304 and keep the dana 20 behind the trans.

I knew a guy once that used the staight six Ford in his mid seventies Jeep. When I ask him why he said he didn't like having a Rambler engine in his Jeep and he had the Ford and it bolted to the trans. I guess that would be the T15 or T150 I know it had a 20 t-case Ilater ended up with it when he went to a 300 and another trans. FWIW

Dad had an old time Jeeper customer who would drive his new 50s-60s Jeeps home, yank the stock engines (F4 and V6) and install his rambler six in the Jeep. It took him about 2-3 months to do all the mods he wanted on it (engine, trans, steering, etc) before it ever went on a trip........

By using a '76 and newer CJ AMC bellhousing the 435 will bolt right up to your 304. '76-'79 need no mods to the bellhousing. Somewhere around '80 to '82 when they changed tranny's you had to drill and tap the right holes. The bosses are cast into the bellhousing for this, and some even have dimples to mark the place to drill. You may have to change the clutch disc, don't remember for sure, and will have to have a special pilot bushing with the Ford inside diameter and AMC outside diameter. R&P 4 WD Parts Inc. sells the pilot bushings. You will need an adapter for the back side to adapt to the 20 transfer. I recommend the Novak unit. Nickmil.
