Spoke to soon, the tapered part of the axle his a indention for a key on the wagoner, the CJ's tapered part is perfectly smooth. This is going is going to cause a problem in the plans. Hmm

Wait a second. You said the Wagoneer was a flanged axle but now are saying you removed the hub and it has a key? That means it's a tapered axle. A flanged axle does not have a nut on the end or removeable hub.
Your CJ has a keyway in the hub and the tapered part of the axle. If it appears smooth all the way around it sounds like the axle may have spun in the hub shearing the key. Look very close for signs of this.

I did say it was flanged and I was wrong. When I went out and took it apart it turned out to be a tapered which made it all easy. Drum = hub.

You are correct mine had sprung, I worked that out after trying to clean it up, as I was cleaning it up, what was left of the key fell out revealing the key-way cut. I will try to get it all smooth again and if not I will just swap it out. I have another rearend and will use the axle out of that one so it is going to be ok I think.
