well i finally sent out my 44 to get rebuilt and have the 4:27 gears and powr-lok installed. i cannot remember which carrier bearings to use with that powr-lok i have. it's a 19 spline case with 30 spline inards. i want to make sure he orders the right bearings for that unit. i'm slowly gathering parts for my dana 30 rebuild as well.
i remember quite some time ago there was a template floating around to drill the drums for better braking. has anyone seen that? i would like to drill mine out while i'm waiting for my axle.

If the case was originally for 19 spline axles then use the differential side bearings for the tapered axle 19 spline case. Changing the side gears doesn't change what bearings are required.

Hope you got your axle back and installed. How did it go drilling your drums? Any thoughts before I drill mine?

i've not drilled them yet. i have a few different sets of drums. one set is the finned drums from the "big" brake set up on a 78 cj and then i have a few of the non finned i might drill out. i'm just not sure which ones i will be using at the moment. it's going to be 3 weeks before he can get to my axle so i'm in no hurry.

Did you test fit your 30 spline axles into the case. I was under he impression that 30 spline axles are larger diameter than 19 spline. Maybe it's not an issue though. I know that the 30 spline cone has a larger ID than the 19 spline bearings.

yeah john nick set me straight on the differences in both bearings. thanks for looking out. i told him to get the bearings for the 19 spline (i think). i cannot wait to get my powr-lok in my 30, finally got a set of 4:27's. i think by summers end i will have it all installed and ready to go, both front and rear. that's if i don't enter any competitions this summer.

With a Powerlock you can swap 30 and 19 spline side gears and the 30 spline axles will fit in a 19 spline case. Not so with a stock open case. The Powerlock is machined larger on the Inside of the carrier bearing journal.

well.. after some time installing the powr-lok's and re-gearing the axles, the jeep hit some hard trails. now the thing that sucks is i told the guy who built my axles to set the rear up nice and tight so it is darn near a posi. well all i have is one wheel peel to the drivers side. on flat ground it spins both but on the trail it's like i said one wheel peel. hell my trac-loc seemed better than this. i'm wondering if he even bought and installed new clutches or if he did and only bought the "smooth" instead of the "aggressive" clutch packs.
i did put limited slip additive in there after i got it back. he told me to drive in figure 8 patterns in both directions for about an hour which i did. he said that will help work the additive into the clutches. i did the same thing for the front but i never put new clutches in the dana 30. my grand cherokee has a welded rear and with little effort at all just walked up what i could not with the cj and mind you i'm still open in the front of the grand. same size tires and same kind of tires. each and every time we hit that spot i tried going up that line but no go. my 14 year old son just walks up it like a pro and i have to hit a different line to make it up. needless to say i'm really dis-appointed with the powr-lok.

had a blast though. i really like the 4:27 gears and the steering is a work out for the arms as i only have an aftermarket 10"-12" steering wheel with 33" tires.

could i replace the clutches with an aggressive pack with out having to re-set the rear end?

    John,

Yes you can pull that Powr-lok..........without changing the gear set-up..............the curved disc's and friction disc's just need to be rearranged to make the unit more aggressive.

And sounds like you need Power steering......

    Duplicated for some reason?

yeah power steering would really help!! i modulate the front brakes on my grand cherokee with my left foot to make it bite more but the front on the cj is a little more challenging with that extra pedal.. sounds like lower gearing so then its more control with two foot driving? i'm just a tad disappointed it's not working like it should

would i be able to tell if new clutches were used? i might have 30-40 miles if that on there

Yes I think one can readily determine if clutches are near to new condition.
Clutch disk wear should obviously be minimal.
I may have a couple of the new aggressive disk laying about.
    I'll check on that..

thanks ken that would be awesome. so is one wheel peel common with the powr-lok?

    One wheel peel ?
    I guess that depends.
The limited slip should be just that.... "a limited amount of slippage".

If your cutting tight corners under power the differential clutches must slip.
In operation it should never lock up going around road curves.....
but it should always give full traction when both wheels are on slippery surfaces.

You can test the rear Powr Lok differential without removing it if you follow the USM instructions.
