There is something very wrong with that Powerlok. Is it always the driver side that spins? In that loose dirt I would think both wheels would spin even with an open diff.

i agree john , there is something wrong with that unit. i think it is only the driver side that spins. i'm thinking the front should have locked up too but i never replaced the clutches after i got it from you but wanted that to be loose.

Obviously the left rear was down in a hole so more weight is on the right rear.
That behaved exactly as an open differential does.
I suggest that likely a clutch disk is missing.
    Not enough disks were installed.....

I think Ken has it nailed. Also, John, when I ran that Powerlok I put modifier in it for the break-in, but went straight gear oil when I changed the oil. A little brake pressure was all it took usually to lock it up.

Most of the gear lubes say they have the friction modifiers in there but I've always had to add more for the Powerlock.
    The brake trick does work.

i know the brake trick works as i use it all the time in my grand cherokee. it's a tad bit more difficult with that extra pedal in there but maybe seeing as it's been so long since i wheeled the cj like that i need to re-learn the pedals
so it's looking like i should tear this thing apart and look at the clutches and get another set coming. i'm also wondering if the cross shafts are in there the right way? so that way it ramps up when it needs to?

i added a small bottle into each diff and drove it around the yard for about an hour. in circles and in a figure 8 pattern to work the modifier to the clutches.

It's not really possible to incorrectly install the pinion mate cross shafts.
I run straight Mobil One Synthetic gear lube in all my many Powr Lok axles.
I have never encountered any problems beyond normal disk wear

here is a picture of both powr-loks first is a dana 30 with the cross shafts that look correct (see the angled part)
and here is a dana 44 with what looks like in correctly installed shafts
    [IMG]
wondering if the guy that did my axle put the shafts in the wrong way or does it not matter how they go in?

this i actually did as i know it needs clutches and such and is temporarily only for visual aid. i hope that when i pull out the unit it does not look like picture 2. i have to assume at this point as i was not there to witness how it went together. this is why i really dislike bringing things to other people to work on.

I don't think the unit could be installed in an axle that way as the case halves would not fully fit together as they should.

I agree. I might not always do it right but I haven't paid someone to learn how to do something I can learn how to do.

well looking at an ox locker seems to be the cheaper route and more simple operation as there is just a cable. how does everyone like their ox locker?
