74' Dana 44 posi Q?

    I am working on a Dana 44 (flanged) that came from a 74 cj5 for a friend of mine. The unit has the positrac side clutch packs, outboard of the spider gears. The spider gears have several broken teeth and need to be replaced.

    Q: Can the spider gears be changed "without" the clutch packs being effected? Will the spiders come out of this posi unit just like they come out of an open carrier? It looks as they will, but I haven't been into a posi unit.

    BTW the posi unit looks to be OEM.

    Sounds like a Trac-loc. the clutches are preloaded between the case and side gears which also preloads the pinion gears. If you remove the pinion gears the side gears will push towards the center of the case unless held in place somehow.
