I'll have to see how well this soda works on the rust, I've read some positive reviews about it. I'm also saving up for a blasting cabinet for smaller parts. It helps keep the mess down too. Once I get everything set up, you are welcome to use the hardware. Buy your media material and knock yourself out.

 

Did a little bit of blasting today, quite the disappointment. The soda does a great job at removing the paint and gunk, but it doesn't remove the rust. My garage also looks like white christmas now too, even with a fan and the door open. At this point I'm going to give up on the frame and just take it to a proper shop. I can still use my blaster for the smaller parts and cleaning up the drive train.

 

Why not media blasting? You could end up paying an arm, leg, and nut for a vendor to do it.... :/ sorry man.

 

I found a place willing to do it for about $125. Not worth my time or the mess, hoping to drop it off next weekend.

 

$125? Wow.... my 58 Corvette frame cost about 600....

 

Couldn't agree with you more. I bought my setup, hated doing it, and now since I own everything, I have to sandblast stuff. I dread pulling it out every time I see something that needs blasting. Saved money, yes. But you're exactly right. Time and mess outweigh the benefits.

 

Post the name of the place, I will be taking in my CJ7 frame this spring and would love to get it done for around the same price. Getting the hood and front fenders to a shop this month for a cleanup and rhinoline on the inside surfaces. Let me know if you know a place cheap.

Any new work on the CJ5?

I am trucking away on planning my build and shopping for a frame, axles, and transfercase.
I will be building a new chassis from the ground up then tearing my body up, painting it, and putting it on the new chassis while selling the old.

I would love to see this CJ5 up and running.

So would I...hit a major speed bump last week. Ended up trashing the frame for scrap, it was twisted badly and wasn't worth repairing. I found another one about 40 minutes away for $100 and plan on picking it up Sunday.

 

I'm sorry for the frame. Man... that really sucks! My frame is shot to **** too (bent as well) so I will be selling it after I buy all the new frame, axles, drive train, and power train then assemble it all. Good luck.... it sounds like you're gonna need it. It will be more worth it though!

 

Turns out an "earlier" model CJ I was looking at was actually a newer frame with an old tub just sitting on top of it. Picked up this nice 1980 CJ-5 frame for $100 today.

 

$100?! Incredibly jealous....

Tub looks straight but a bit too far for my taste. Already have enough projects as it is and no room left!

 

Thought a nice tub to replace yours plus it is the same year (1979) and the coveted 25th Anniversary Silver Special Edition with matching numbers. I may just take it .

 

Frame is painted. Working on suspension at the moment, hoping to have a "roller" by next weekend. Wheels are pretty sorry looking though, they will need to be removed at some point and get a fresh coat of paint.

 

You took it to the same sandblast place? What material did you use to coat it?
When you do the suspension, can you take pictures of the mating areas to the frame? I am in the process of doing mine too.

 

I didn't end up sandblasting it. As my wife likes to point out, I have too many projects and money vampires at the moment. I'm also coming up on a clutch job and possible rebuild on my daily driver so I have to divert funds to that. I went the cheap route and just took a wire wheel to the entire frame. It was really noisy and took a while but the brush only cost me $3. I primed the frame with about 2.5 cans of this:

I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. After painting, I could make out a number of spots I didn't clean up good enough but you can't notice it at first glance.
