My CJ5 is being repainted as we speak (and a lot of body work to boot, to fix my dented hood from my "incident"), and it looks like I'm going to have to keep it outside since the wife wants to hog the garage. It snows here occasionally during the winter (and this is my daily driver), so I want to get a cover to leave on at night so my windshield and windows won't be frosted over in the morning while my heater warms up. I'm looking at these:

    http://www.car-covers.com/covers/suv/jeep/cj5/1969/ultimate-shield-suv-cover.html
    http://www.empirecovers.com/detail....e=JEEP&model=CJ+(All)&year=1969&source=search
    http://www.empirecovers.com/detail....e=JEEP&model=CJ+(All)&year=1969&source=search

Both the "ultimate shield" and "titan" came out to around $160-165 using coupon codes.

Maybe this is an unnecessary expense, but I think a waterproof cover would definitely help, and I'm thinking the fleece lining should be fine for the paint job. Any input, or experience with any other covers? I'd also be fine with one that only covers the cab and tub, but I'm having trouble finding one to fit my model with the soft top on, such as these: http://www.jeepcovers.com/

    Thanks.

Yes. Mice and squirrels ate up the soft linings... Maybe you don't have that problem.

Hmm; did you replace it? I saw a couple that didn't have a fleece liner that are supposedly paint-safe, but I'm wary.

I used the Rain Gear cover from jeepcovers.com for the '71.
I really liked it, and sold it to another board member/Tioga JeepKamp buddy after I sold the CJ5. The cover is well made and long-lasting.

I always installed it over a bikini top. Never tried it over the soft top.
Have you talked to the folks at jeepcovers?

When I lived in snow country, I used to take used-up towels out and cover the windshield at night. Cuts way down on the having to scrape windows. 5 year old beach towels work really well for this.

Also make clearing snow away a breeze. Clear the hood first before removing the towel from the windshield.

I've had towels, and even cardboard, freeze to the windshield sometimes, making the preventive action worse than no action at all.
This is usually in a freezing rain situation.
A cover would be better in that kind of weather, but may be difficult to get off if covered in glaze ice... and a PITA to store after you do get it off...

Yeah, around here (NH) if the glass was wet, the towel would be stuck to the windshield until May. We use blue plastic tarps.

If you get one, whatever you get, make sure it is breathable. Moisture WILL get through and a non breathable cover will promote mold, mildew, and rot.

Haven't talked to the Jeepcovers guys, but I think I will; seems weird they wouldn't make one to fit my Jeep with a soft top on (not like I really need it in the summer). Found a few that are breathable, have fleece on the inside, and are fully waterproof, and most come with a bag to store them in. I was thinking of just letting it air out on my porch during the day. Haven't tried the towel idea; it's a thought, and I'm afraid tarps could scratch the paint job. At least the empirecovers models have a lifetime warranty; I'm wondering if it covers rodent damage...

I have one from Empire Covers (?) for the CJ-6. They list the same cover for a CJ-5 and a CJ-6, which is clearly wrong. I bought one for a Jeepster Commando, and it fits fine. Even with the mirrors folded in, the wind flapped it enough to wear a hole through the fabric at that location. The only way it stays on is from elastic in the bottom edge, and the fit. Maybe if it were a little tighter, it would not have moved enough to wear through. You could maybe put an elastic cord of some kind (rope with a loop on both ends, and a bungie?) around the body at the cowl to reduce flapping.

Hopefully since it's made for a Cj5, mine should fit. Which one did you order? If it wasn't for the hole, would you be happy with it? Honestly, if I got a hole at the mirror I wouldn't be that concerned; my main worry is the snow on the windshield and the main body of the Jeep.
