I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere but I didn't turn up any search results. My question is this:
    1. Does anyone sell a flanged axle conversion for the early Dana 44 Jeep rear axles with the tapered axles?

I see the kits for the AMC 20 all over the place. I have considered the Herm's Full Float kit, but would like to go the flanged route if possible. I see search results of Studebaker guys converting their tapered axles to flaged, so I am guessing its possible? They said their kits were made by Mosier, but their website doesn't list any application for Jeeps other than the AMC 20 that I found.
I am getting ready to rebuild the rear of my Jeep and was considereing a lock-rite install, so the one piece axle idea had me thinking about this. And before someone suggests that I go to a 14 bolt or Dana 60, let me say that this is for my GPW project, running an L-head and 30" or 31" tires tops. I've been looking for years to find the elusuve factory flanged offset dana 44 rear, and came close a time or two, but still don't have one in my hands!
    Thanks in advance.

No one makes a reputable conversion. Scott Milliner tried one from the only company that supposedly made a conversion for this and had so many issues he converted to a ff kit.
Might contact him and get more info.
If you're stuck on a flanged axle R&P 4 WD Parts and other companies can build one, but they aren't cheap. Much cheaper/easier to convert to FF.

Thanks for the info. I figured there had to be a reason why the AMC 20 kits have been around forever, and there aren't any for the 44. I think with the small engine, I'll just take my chances on the stock axles for awhile and see what happens.

If your just running the L head, a maintained split axle will hold up just fine. I ran them with the V6's for years without any issues as long as you kept up on them.

I made my own but it's yet to be tested.. The hardest part as I remember was making the bearing and shrinking ont he bearing locking rings.. If I ever manage to finish and drive that Jeep I'll let you all know how it goes..

As long as you drive it like you love the thing and not one of those gotta break every thing on my vehicle as possible types that seem to be scattered all over the landscape sometimes, you should have many long years of service ahead of you.
