I boxed in the front part of my frame and I'm about to weld in some sleeves for the bolts but I want to know what y'all think first.

Should I run three bolts or just two? The angles are kind of weird because I'm going to use that original 3/4" hole the already cut on the frame.

Just weld the bumper on or if you want to bolt it (2) 3/8 bolts grade 5 bolts per side would more than adequate.

I'm not committed enough to weld the bumper on, just in case I want to change it down the road

Changed my mind just now. I'm going to fill that hole in so I can make both bolt holes in line with each other.

I think you're better off if the bolts dont line up. I'm not engineer but I think it would help distribute the load across the frame better by not concentrating the force in one line.

I fab a beam thats goes inside the frame rails and bumber is mounted with two angle iron about 15 inch long each. This is a good way to reinforce the front frame.

Thats a pretty good idea. And it would give me a solid base to mount a winch.

Well, not sure what bumper you have, but I tapped the 2"x3/4" solid stock that the bumper mounts over with 1/2" holes and bolted it up with grade 8 bolts. I used either 2 on one side and 3 on the non steering box side or 3 and 4, don't remember.

I haven't even built my bumper yet but I need to get the holes cut before I paint my frame. And that has to be done soon because I just finished sandblasting it. I think I'm just going to use the original hole and use the upper diagonal cross for a second hole.

Here's the new plan. I'm leaving the holes and the box, I'm going to cut two holes diagonal, and when I make the bumper, it'll be two pieces of 1/4 steel that can fit inside the box and between those I'll put two sleeves in it like an H. that way I can slide it inside the boxed frame and it'll look cleaner without have it bolted to the outside. What do you think?

    So here's what I did.

The tabs on the bumper will be 1/4 solid stock with sleeves welded together (resembles a shackle) and will slide inside the frame. The frame will sandwich the bumper tabs.

Grade 8 7/16x2.5" bolts. Think that'll do the trick?

You should put sleeve on the bolt because when you will tight them because if you dont you will compress the the frame and the bolt will get loose very fast.

    My 2 cents

The inserts on the bumper are going to be sleeved. Its going to slide inside the frame

Hum i was going thru the whole post...the way you want to mount you're bumper will be good for road use but off-roading i'm afrait it's not going to be so much strong in case you need to get pull out off a mud-hole or sometine similiar by another 4x4 using a rope.

itll be fine its like a big receiver hitch those things will pull 12000 pounds. you will never shear 4 bolts off at once.

The shear strength on ONE of the bolts is 13,500lbs. If I'm understanding this correctly each will be in double shear.

So 108,000lbs total. That's why 3/8 grade 5 would of been fine. :)
