Is there supposed to be a seal or anything here at the axle shaft?

on some there is a splash shield (made from plastic) and it sits right in that last step before entering the tube. they do make a part that acts like a seal you can get from 4wd.com to keep debris from getting inside the tubes.

They are there for a reason. They keep the worst of the crap out of your axle housing. Fine sand can still get in but gravel cannot.

I run the part that was linked above...however, I wouldn't tear down the axle just to put one on. Just be aware of it and check occasionally for any gravel or larger particles that might get stuck.

That keeps the gear oil in the carrier, not debris out of the axle tubes

Yea. Its already apart. I emailed Alloy USA to make sure it would fit an earlier d30. Don't see why it shouldn't.
