I've never needed fender flares and we get lots of rain around here so there lots of mud.

Don't have flares on mine, and I actually drive it. On the street, in the wild, whatever.

Those two handle like things on the top of the windshield, one on each side are called Stand-Offs. If they are like original, they have canvas on the side away from the windshield, and are tall enough that when the hood is all the way back in the latched position (with or without the latch) the hood rests on them. The canvas is to keep down the scratches to the paint job.

As for what holds my hood up?

The rest of my jeep holds my hood up off the ground quite well.

why would you need fender flares if you don't run wide tires?

Some people like the look, some people don't like mud, rocks, whatever being thrown up on their Jeep when the front tires are turned. It rains enough around here even with skinny tires a lot of spray comes off the front tires. I don't run them on the '59-5. I already have them installed on the -6 project for legal purposes.

To get back to the OP's question, yup, '62 should have a loop on the hood and a catch on the W/S frame as has been said. The catch on the W/S frame is the same as the passenger seat catch used on later Early CJ's.

    Ok that makes sense.

Anyway if anyone is interested this is what factory prop looks like. If a salvage one can be found I believe it could be easily added to an earlier model. You'll need the little bracket that mounts to the grill stiffener rod too.
