I just swapped over to a Dana 30 and I gave my 27 away before I realized the differential cases were different lengths. Does anyone know what the length is approx from the yoke to the front of the case (not including the cover)? If anyone has the time to take a quick measurement that would be swell.

    thanks!

What you're talking about is the carrier. The carrier is the part the tubes press into. Common called a pumpkin. The case is the part the ring gear bolts to. Don't have the measurements handy but if you don't get them today could probably get them tomorrow.

May I ask why you need the measurement? Driveshaft length?

Ok, thanks for the correction. I don't mind waiting until tomorrow.

The reason I am asking for the measurement is for the driveshaft. I don't have a way to fully compress or extend the suspension, so I figure that with that measurement, I can come up with an estimate for the new shaft length.

I'll measure my 27 from the face back to the yoke where the u-joint is seated

This might be the only time I'll ever beat Nick at anything related to a jeep. 1970 - Dana 27A front Axle - From the front gasket surface to the rear is 9 5/8". It's 12" when measured to where the u-joint seats in the yoke. This was measured off a framing square set on a fairly level floor. Different measurement will result if you just throw a tape across the tapered pumpkin. Not sure why I feel the need to be so precise.

Drive lines are measured with the weight of the vehicle on level ground. Then measure from center of u-joint to center of u-joint. That is all you will need. A drive line shop will figure out the rest.

That's perfect! Thank you and I certainly appreciate the speed in which you beat Nick. haha

I will also use a square on the garage floor (level here too).

Thanks again! The jeep is off to the exhaust shop tomorrow morning before work. I abandoned the idea of welding my own exhaust up. The exhaust will be the only thing on the jeep that is assembled by someone else.

...I think I can live with that. ;)
