Here are some pics of my CJ-6 project tub. Is this a '55 as I have been informed? Doesn't really matter I was just curious. Man this makes me anxious to get my hands dirty. $500 seems like a pretty good deal for all this and a title with it.

Couldn't tell you if it is a '55 but it doesn't look like it started life as a CJ6. The battery box on the cowl indicates it was an M38A1 at one time, maybe the M170's had that too I am not sure. The rivets under the side mirror, the door openings and the top edge of the tub make me think someone built the rest. Oh and the tail gate is not factory. But hey, who cares it looks solid from the pics and for the price how can you go wrong. I wish I could find a deal like that.

Thanks for the info. Ya it seems to be in pretty good shape. I was starting to doubt it's authenticity though from the tailgate to the floor pan. I didn't see the toolbox area under the passenger seat but sorta figured the PO may have put a new pan in it. I'll check out the vin number tomorrow and see what it's looking like.

The faux battery box is stock until the mid/late-60's.

Technically there was no '55 CJ-6, it was a 1956 model introduced in 1955.

Hard to tell, not much to give clues with what you have there.

Can't see the speedometer (easily and often swapped), the grille indicator lights look to be later bullet style lights and with no frame you can't see if it has a shackle reversal.

SN would tell the story though...

So here's a stupid question. Where's the vin located? Or where "should" it be? I always thought it was right on the dash or around that area but I didn't see it. Here's a few more shots from today.

Not 100% sure on a '55 but the vin on most Early CJ's is on the driver's side firewall. Just about where that fuel pressure regulator or whatever it is is at. The speedo indicates very early CJ also. My stock '57 is different and I believe '58 or '59 they went to the later "early CJ" style. The front turn signals look to be the same as my '57 also. No cutout for the heater on the driver's firewall also indicates earlier than my '57 unless someone filled it.

I knew a guy named Bubba Sage (Air Force - went home to Ohio after he retired) who reskined a rig just like that (it was green last I saw it, and I aint sayin how long ago either). Don't know where you are, but that sure looks like his handy work due to the way the rivits and such are on it.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check my cousins old title to see if a PO was a Mr. sage :). But so what everyone is saying that this doesn't seem to fit with a CJ-6 and more of a M170 or CJ-5 stretched? I'm just very new to all this so sorry of these are dumb questions but I just like to know what I have. I don't plan on putting it back to stock so if it was something other than an original CJ-6 I'd be fine with it because it still looks the part.

I think the speedometer is the right one for '55.

Ditto on what Nick said about the location of the data plate.

    Nice find!

    yep '55 early 56 speedo
Tub looks correct for the year as well
    Def. not military
Data plate is missing in the picture, should be drivers side fire wall up high just to the right of the radiator support rod bracket.
Complete out side has been re skinned so its hard to tell the condition but looks like a start. Good find, have fun!

Fuel filler is in an odd location. Tank should be under driver's seat. Unless there was an aux. tank added at some point.
