I picked up a set of headlight rings in GREAT shape, but the have no tab in the top to go down in the slot in the buckets. Any idea what rings these could be, fit fine, look the same (maybe slightly taller, just no tab. And the tabs are not just broken off. Did the rings change and later come with no top tab? Am I missing an additional piece to hold the top of the ring in? I looked at the ring posts on here, but none speak to the presence, or lack thereof, of the top tab.

I am probably going to make a T'shaped piece to hold the top of the ring in, just wondering if anyone knew what rings these were.

    Whew, so many questions, sorry.

I have to look at mine again, but I think mine don't have a tab on them either.. They are just held on by a screw, my jeep isnt home right now due to a break down, but when I get to where it is I will look at mine. My jeep is a 69, but have no idea as to if those are the rings that came on the jeep.

There is a tab, or should be, on the top that fits in a slot in the bucket. It's kind of spot welded in place iirc. The screw on the bottom holds everything in place. I have pics of them but photobucket is acting up and won't let me in, again.

I don't have a pic of the back but all three of these styles I have use the tab and one screw hole. They are from the left, '72 and newer for sure, Early CJ-5/6, and the far right is flatfender, I believe 3a but not 100% sure on that one.

Yes Nick, the far right is 2A/3A. I would also like to add that the one for early CJ5/6 is the same for the 3B also.

I will try and get a pic, definitely was never a tab there, no broken weld, but I can make it work possible with a screw in the top of the bucket. In looking at the photo of the tree, my screw hole even looks a bit different, not as formed as the ones in the photo, more of just an indent in the metal at the hole, but holes in everything (bucket, bulb, bulb retainer, ring) line up when assembled on the bench. Could they perhaps not be Jeep rings?

Jeepcj, I would be interested in hearing about your rings and how they mount if they do not have the tabs.

Sounds like a pic of what you have is a must here.

OK, sorry it took so long to get photos, but still wondering if anyone has seen rings like this, like I said before, they will still work (I rebuild, don't restore), and they are in GREAT shape.

There are actually two holes at the mounting hole, assuming a drain hole? The indent for the mounting hole does not look as hard edged as the others I have seen. Absolutely no remnants of a tab at the top center of the inside lip. Anyone seen rings like this before? Pretty much wondering so that I might have a different source for rings that will work for me. Photos below:

Totally different. M38a1 and CJ rings will not interchange.

These rings will work fine just by adding a screw into the top of the bucket to work like a tab and hook the edge of the trim and look great installed (I test fitted on on my 59). They are in superb shape, no pitting at all, may actually look for another set to use on my 59 permanently if they are generally less pitted, or newer. Been trying to find vw or fiat rings and have been unsuccessful in finding ones like these. Those that I have seen are made to mount to a curved surface. Anyone else have any idea?

Got it!!! 1947-1954 chevy truck rings, for sure. Who Knew!!

been Googling headlight ring photos all afternoon. Anyway, they work, but just as old and likely to be in rough shape.
