I know several of you are familiar with the wiper linkages on these bottom-mount wiper setups "camming out"...mine is doing it on the driver's side wiper. It seems that the linkage between the wiper motor itself and the driver's side may be just slightly too short, since the as the linkage moves to the left, the left-hand wiper linkage swings up a little too far, occasionally going past the horizontal and up, making the wiper go below the windshield and get stuck. It doesn't go upside-down every time, but it does hang up at that portion of the cycle EVERY TIME. I often have to take out the dash plug in front of the wiper linkage and pop it back down with my finger.

For one, I'm worried about it getting stuck for too long and burning out my brand-new wiper motor. I'm constantly using my wipers intermittently to avoid this as much as possible, which is obviously frustrating.

And today, the left-most wiper linkage (aforementioned) SNAPPED today after it got stuck. Ugh.

    So two questions:

    1. Suggested fix (other than simply replacing the arm)? I'm not much of a fabricator...an adjustable linkage might work; I think it needs to be maybe 1/2-1" longer. Pure guesstimation.

    2. Does anyone have an illustrated parts breakdown of that system? Jeep4x4center has the closest thing I could find, although it lists it (part #18 in the link below) to fit a '76 or later model. The linkage I'm replacing is just under 9", and the one in the link is 10 1/8". That seems like too much of a length increase.

    http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-windshield-parts/cj5-cj7-cj8-scrambler.htm

The wipers have become my bane for a jeep that, other than these damned wipers, runs fantastic. I really need to figure something out.

the first question I have to ask is this a replacement windshield frame
wiper motor only spins in a circle and if what you are saying is happening on drivers side - yes linkage is too short
just another guesstimation is linkage to other side the real problem . do they sweep the same
had a similar problem with passenger side after replacing windshield frame - took a 1/2" off linkage (right side)

    I don't THINK it's a replacement frame...not quite sure how I'd know. I'm pretty sure it's not, though.

I'm wondering if I should modify the linkage to make it longer, and if that's even really feasible. I have a buddy with a good welder who claims he's a savvy metalworker, but I'm a little skeptical.

On the other side, if ANYONE knows the part# for that linkage, I can't find it anywhere. Anywhere. I've called the dealerships, and my old-*** VIN won't come up in their system, and the only linkages I can find at any of the big Jeep parts sites are for '76 models and later. I'm wondering if I'm going to have to make my own linkage. Shortening is a lot easier than making one longer that will hold up to extended use.

***ALSO***My wipers are ****, has anyone had any experience with any of the new modern 11" wipers (i.e., double bladed or Rain-X type) on the antiquated stock Jeep arms? Mine are the kind that end in a sort of "S" shape (I'll try to post pics later).

    Thanks in advance.

Not sure about the '69, but I had a similar issue with the linkage on my '73 and I never did find the correct linkage. In the meantime, I found a later model assembly and cut the rod coming from the motor. I then used about a 4-5 inch long 5/16" bolt (with the head cut off) and a couple of small hose clamps to extend it about an inch. It works great, and my bubbafied fix doesn't show. Until I can find an intermediate linkage assembly it will have to do.

Somebody, maybe George the Jeep, was offering linkage for the '68-'75 windshields. They looked like they may have been modified late model pieces. Might try a search on here and see if it brings up the vendors name. Did you try the where to find parts sticky thread for a possible source?

Yeah, I've looked through just about every possible site I could find in there. A couple, like George the Jeep, apparently don't exist anymore since there websites and/or phone #'s don't work.

Anyway, the linkage I found before was this one:

    http://www.quadratec.com/products/55304_00.htm

Mine is right around 9" long, which is 1 1/8-1 1/4" shorter than this one. I'm worried that a length jump that big is too much, although I suppose it could pivot a little to allow room for the extra length (?). The only other option I can think of is to get that one, cut out 1/4-1/2," and weld (or some other method of attaching them) together to make a shorter piece.

I haven't called Walck's yet and suppose I should just call some others as well; I just can't believe that NO ONE has this part listed. Any other ideas?

Did you try putting a wtb ad in the classifieds? Someone may have good used parts from a rusted out w/s. they also used the same wiper linkage parts in dj's with the bottom mount wipers with the motor outside the frame. Maybe a postal Jeep parts supplier would have them. There is a company that specializes in DJ's but the name escapes me. I know several of our members have purchased columns from from them for Saginaw steering conversions.

Nickmil, did you ever remember the name of that DJ company?

Does anyone else know where I might be able to find this linkage? My best bet is to buy the one for the '76 from quadratec and, if necessary, lengthen or shorten it. The one I presently have broke at the hole where the wiper fitting goes through, which I'm worried will be difficult to fix.

AHH, the forum classifieds; no, I didn't; I was thinking you meant Craigslist. I will.

jc588...would you believe that I called that #, and they said someone called earlier today asking for the exact same thing as me? Odd.
