I looked around the forum a bit and didn't see anything on this issue. I have a '56 CJ5. I have been looking for a set of fenders for my restoration. Will fenders from intermediate or late CJ5's fit my early model? I thought the engine compartment was lengthened after in the Kaiser years to fit the V8's, did this change the fender size? Thanks!

Yes, the fenders from '72 up are longer so won't work for you.

Also '70 and '71 for sure have the marker light indent which is not correct even though they are the right length

I have often wondered if you could mount the front grill farther forward some how so as to be able to use the 72 and on fenders.

    Today's Dumb Question-

Is it possible to buy a set of 72' up fenders & cut/modify them to fit a 71' down?

Probably but would be a fair amount of work and would still have the marker light indent and holes.

I would look for OEM fenders. They are not scarce, and they fit better and are made of heavier steel. Fenders from Postal Jeeps will work too.

If you are good at working with steel and body work, the later fenders could be modified to fit. The part that stretches them to fit the longer wheelbase is a simple addition to the basic shape. As Nick mentions, you'd have to deal with the clearance light indents, or add clearance lights if that does not offend your sense of originality.

Try some other sources, like Classic Enterprises or Oconee 4x4/Jeep.

Yup, definitely wouldn't be 'right", but if nothing else is available...

Would it involve more than removing the last few inches & welding the tub flange back on? Is the hood flange a different shape? Tub flange bolt holes in different spots? Problems with the inners hitting something they shouldn't?

Nope, your instinct about this is correct Howard. Just cut them off and reweld the tub flange.

My concern is the diagonal seam and the outer support piece spot welded on the outside of the fender in the area that needs shortening. If you got a really nice rust free set then it might be worthwhile if the marker light indents aren't an issue. My experience is CJ fenders tend to have rust in the support area. There's more to it than just cutting them shorter and bending or welding on the fender to firewall mounting flange. If you don't mind the labor and are reasonably good with sheet metal work it can be done and the results can be good.

I was really considering using replacements, not cutting up old ones. While the ones in the link above go for over $470 each the later style ones are listed for less than $85. No they aren't great fenders, no they aren't 'correct", but at $700+ savings for a pair if you aren't worried about being absolutely correct then I'd say it's worthwhile buying the later ones & doing a bob job on'em. :)

I had a set of the late model replacements. Bought new. One side was an inche longer than the other, both were bent downward and was the way they came out of the die.
I'd recommend looking for some oem short fenders even if they need work.

You can use later fenders but you need the hood as it is longer by the same amount and you'd have to make a new grill mount and all that moves the radiator further from the engine. In short, it can be done, but it's a lot of work, I did it. I had also stretched my frame so it was a little easier. Wouldn't be practical for what you are trying to do.

Posi, he's talking about shortening long fenders. Not sure if you saw that or not

I was thinking and wondering on the Procedure that Posi did. With the longer hood and fenders costing something like a third what the shorter ones do, from a financial standpoint. Plus more room under the hood. Would this make installing a straight six in the early cj5 easier?

X2. I purchased a new re pop fender and the curves near the headlight are not smooth. Also the body line across the front was not as defined as the OEM. But unless you are really looking you wouldn't see it. On the other hand if you are a member of this site you would.

I also paid too much money for the fender.

The DJ postal jeeps used the shorter fender thru their whole model run, some of them were fiberglas.
All I have seen have side marker lights and extra holes on top for huge turnsignals.
They made up the extra engine length with a balloon grille.
