Does anyone know a method of pre-priming a freshly rebuilt F-head. I want to make sure it's lubed well before cranking.
    Thanks for the reply's.

You would need an external pump of some type connected to the gage port. Since the oil pump drive gear is pined to the oil pump shaft, you can not make a distributor primer for either L or F head 134's like you can for most v6/v8's. On all my F head rebuilds, I just use my remote starter switch on a compression tester to turn it over without the ignition hooked up. Not as good as a full primed system but certainly better than a dry start.

Did you put some kind of lube on the bearings/cam before it went back together? If so just pull the plugs & crank it over with the starter. Keep the valve cover off to verify oil is flowing. It may help to take the oil pump off first & pack it with some vaseline.

You can use the Vaseline trick, or simply dunk the oil pump in an open quart of oil and rotate the shaft several turns by hand in each direction. Once the pump is full of oil it you can bolt it up into place and it will produce oil almost immediately.

I also leave the coil wire off and the plugs out of the head until I see good oil pressure on the gauge while cranking. Then replace the plugs and coil wire and fire it up!

You can make a pre- luber out of a garden sprayer. Put a quart or two of oil in it, take off the nozzle, hook the hose to a barb fitting threaded into an oil gallery, pump it up, and voila. Best to do this before you fill the crank case with oil or make sure you leave room for the extra oil....
