Hello all and first post. I have an itch for another jeep, and have not owned one for fifteen years or so. My last and only one was a 74 CJ5 with 258 six T-18 4spd and flanged axle. It is long gone now but lately I have spotted a 69 CJ5 with the V-6 and three speed.

My question is, while I was looking underneath the body tub at the floor and cross member condition it has 1/2" to 3/4" square tubing as supports. The jeep is in not to bad shape for a 69 in the rust belt area. So is that factory construction method for the body tub on a 69?

Do a search here for hat channels and see if that's what your looking at.

For tub supports Jeep used what are called "hat channels" which is basically a sheetmetal channel with flanges on either side. It looks like an upside down brimmed hat when in place. These were filled with oak from the factory for support which is why they rot out. Sounds like someone did some repairs to these mounts. This is common and if done well usually is stronger than the original mounts. I used 1" x 2 1/2" rectangle tube (iirc) on my CJ-6 project because mine were all rotted off.

Thanks that's what I figured, it is an old repair done when it was repainted.
