I'm replacing my throwout bearing and collar. I see where a spring is supposed to connect to the collar, but I can't find the spring attached to anything. My old collar was shaved back to the spring attachment tang and I don't see where the spring was attached to the transmission or bellhousing. My Jeep is a 1955 CJ5 with a T90 three speed transmission. What if I re-install the throwout bearing without the return spring? Can it be done without much wear problems?

Can anyone tell me where the spring attaches to the transmission? I'm thinking I can go to the parts store and just pick a suitable spring and find some way to attach it to the transmission.

The spring attaches to the front bearing retainer of the transmission. There is a large hole in the face with a small hole through the side intersecting the large hole. that's where the spring attaches, through the two holes.

Thanks much, I found the mounting hole on the bearing retainer. Funny, I looked at it several times and didn't see the smaller hole, but when you look at the collar it is obvious where the spring needs to be. Oh well, it's good to have a site such as this.

I bought a carb throttle return spring at Napa this morning. I had to cut it down twice before I had enough tension to pull it off the clutch when releasing the clutch pedal. Everything is completed and no more noise from the throwout bearing. I've put the jeep on ebay so that I can concentrate on the CJ6 project and to make a little more room in the driveway. I hope someone who wants to restore it to stock will be the buyer.
