so i was poking around a local junkyard and found a 70 comando that is completly rotted out i walked up to it and noticed it had side pipes i thought cool it has a v6 poped the hood and there was a 6 banger i said to my friend jokingly as i sat in the drivers seat that if it had a 4spd it was a pretty rare
t98 and i would buy it on the spot. so i go threw the gears and there was a total of 5 gears 4 forward 1 reverse. so before i pull the pin on buying it was there any other 4spd that was offered other than the t98? i looked under and didnt see anything that would leed me to belive that someone swaped things around

Not as familiar with Jeepster Commandos but if a 4 speed was offered from Jeep it would be a T-98/T-18. Anything else would be swapped in. I'd look underneath and make sure what's there. Jeeps are notorious for modifications/swaps.

The 4sp option with the V6 (in CJ's anyhow) was the T18.

Never heard of a 4sp in a commando but you never know.

Of course a sm420 bolts to the buick bellhousing,
and would look normal but there would be an adaptor between the 4 speed and Tcase

Only Jeepster\Commando that ever came with a factory installed 4 speed was 72/73 with a 232/258 and were T-18. Heard of a couple of Jeepsters that people have run across that had 4 speeds but just because it's there and it "looks" factory isn't proof it is factory.

In a '70, I'd guess that it's a swap. I know the CR T-18 was available in '72-73 with the 232/258 in the bullnose Commando. There were a few '71 V6 CJ-5s built with the CR T-18, so I suppose it could have showed up in the Jeepster that year too. Seems extraordinarily unlikely that a '70 would be so equipped though.

That said, Jeep was very accommodating about the build sheet in those days, and it's possible that a '70 could have been built that way at the factory or by a dealership. When I bought my '75 CJ-6 in the summer of '75, I was offered either the CR or WR T-18 as a dealer-installed option. It would have used all factory parts except for the rear driveshaft.
