Amp Light on but Ignition is turned off

I have a 1972 CJ5 with the 232 engine. My amp light is on right now and my battery is draining. The ignition is turned off.

My alternator doesn't seem to be putting out a charge either. I have replaced the voltage regulator, but that did not fix the issue. Could a faulty alternator cause this or does anyone have any other ideas as to where to look for a problem?

    Thanks,

    Mark

I think this can occur if the diodes in the alternator go bad. I'd take your alternator to autozone or o'reillys and have it tested.

As was said above, that is usually the result of a shorted diode in your alternator. Time to replace your alternator.

You have other problem as well as stated above. First off the amp ind light is actually powered from both ends. One end is powered by the ign sw when in the "ON" position and then power from the alternator when engine is running. If the light is on when the switch is off that means you are feeding power to the amp ind bulb from some other source and it's not the alternator. You need to pull the indicator wire off the alt and leave the ign sw turned off and put a test lite on the wire you took off the alt and see if it lits up. If it does then you need to back trace and find the power source. It should not be lit.

One thing,,, the light housing at the cluster has a funny plastic sleeve with a tee wire terminal in it, could that be where the problem is? if the wires from the alternator and the ignition lead are switched.
