I've recently come across a Koenig 100 PTO winch, (base mounted, not that it matters much) and I'm seriously considering mounting a hydraulic motor to the winch and driving it off an electric clutch operated pump on the engine. I've googled about as much as I can handle, and haven't seen anything at all worth mentioning. Has anyone else attempted this before? Any pointers or ideas? I originally was intending to just do a normal PTO setup, but the issues with being able to run the winch and drive the wheels at a matching speed seems like a pretty big limitation. Also clearance issues with the PTO hitting stuff on the trail, and needing a skid-plate to shield it have me a bit concerned. I've got about $850 left in the budget to install the winch, and it really looks like its possible to convert this into a hydro drive well within the budget thanks to cheap ebay surplus parts and random bits I have laying around.

Is this a good idea? a bad idea? I'd love to hear what you think...

    A couple of thoughts...
1-I've seen quite a few CJ PTO winch setups, and if memory serves, they were all high enough not to be a trail hazard.
2-You really shouldn't try to drive the Jeep while winching-the possibility of sudden unloading & tensioning on the winch cable can have dire consequences.
3-Ive never seen a hydraulic conversion on a PTO winch, but it sounds cool if you can make it work.

FWIW Ramsey offers hydraulic as well as PTO versions of their series 200 winches-

Should be a no-brainer to do it with a Koenig. O.K.- maybe a bit of a brainer- you'll have some figuring to do to match the pump & motor for power & rpm. I ran the calcs way back when, at least for a Ramsey, if i got the calculations right it comes out to about 3 1/2 HP to run a winch at rated pulling speed/capacity.

Hate to knock your idea, but getting a hydraulic system put together that will drive your winch would cost much more than 850 bucks.

You can buy a decent electric winch for 850 and sell you pto winch and be much farther ahead.

I've run Koenig PTO winches for years and never had clearance issues. I've also used the winch while the transfer case is in gear to keep the tires turning to climb over obstacles like rocks or logs so they don't get wedged. As soon as I'm over the obstacle I put the transfer case back in neutral. You do have to be careful and match your gear to the speed of the winch. This does take some practice..
Another member did a conversion similar to this a while back. Might try a search as it might come up.
