I have gotten all my OD parts from Advance Adapters. For the D18 rebuild kit, I purchased mine from Novak.

I'd still give Herm a try, he'll probably be cheaper

what is a good solvent to clean/soak parts in?
I heard some shops use kerosene and brake fluid. (that sounds a bit rough)

I got a gallon of parts cleaning solvent from a local oil/lubricant distributor. Worked fine.

use solvent to take off grime, brake clean to remove solvent. get a spray nozzle for the air compressor, makes cleaning parts easier.

We've discussed this before. Traditional parts cleaning fluid is paint thinner. has various names - naptha, Stoddard's solvent, paint thinner, probably others. There are some water-based products that work well; Lucas has a product specifically for parts cleaning - can't remember the name though. You need air to get things really dry.

I'd think that washing the solvent off with brake cleaner is overkill for transmission parts, which will be immersed in oil anyway. Get 'em clean and grit-free, then in plastic bags till you're ready to assemble. An oily residue will help to keep things from rusting.

I agree except on one point. When ASSEMBLING a transmission I like to spray the parts down with brake cleaner to remove the oily residue. It allows the assembly lube to stick to the gears and shafts and help keep things like needle bearings in place. It also gets that last little bit of grit out of the parts that the solvent can't always get. The solvent residue can keep the assembly lube from sticking very well and keeping the bearings in place. Plus, you can catch a good buzz!    R) R) Nickmil.
