Hey guys, i got a dilemna. When I began tearing the front axle on my 66 cj5 apart for rebuild, there were no inner seals. It is a Dana 27. I'm about to put it all back together, and am wondering if all of these axles had inner seals? If not, what keeps the oil in the differential from entering the knuckles?? Thanks guys.

My 27 had inner seals. I made an install tool from a length of all-thread with a couple of large washers and nuts that I pressed the seals in with. Do one side at a time or they tend to get cocked when you install them. I can post a pic of the tool a little later if you want.

The inner seals should be in the axle tubes behind the differential side bearings (carrier bearings)

Sorry it took so long for these pics. Hope they help. I started with a length of 5/8" all-thread. I used three different sized washers to get from the 5/8" dia up to the large washer that actually presses the seal in. I spot welded the washers together. As I recall I had to grind a little off the OD of the large washer to match the dia of the seal. The last pic shows it assembled. As I mentioned earlier, don't try to press both seals in at the same time. Do one then the other. It can be challenging getting them to go in straight.
