    Hi fellows,

I also have Powr-Loks on my M38A1 on both diffs (Dana 25 & Dana 44).
I recently did the torque wrench test as mentioned in the Powr Lok service manual of the 60´s.

On the Dana 44 I read 270 ft lb - which I think indicates a clutch pack in "new" condition.

On the Dana 25 I read only 35 ft lb - which is slightly below the minimum mentioned in the service manual. I am familiar enough with the Powr Lok to judge how severe this cripples the off-road capabilities. Is it still delivering enough traction with that or do I have an "open" diff now?

If I would rebuild the Powr Lok with a new clutch pack, how usable is the jeep then on wet or snowy/icy roads? Will it go straight in curves then, or is it only requiring more "arm-control" at the steering wheel, following curves bravely then...

Please support me with your experiences.

    Regards

    Philipp

    Re: Power lok rebuild questions

You don't quite have an open diff yet but most likely the clutches are getting worn causing less pre-load so it won't lock up as tight. Any time you have a limited slip or locked front end it will affect handling on ice and snow. Hard pack slippery snow and ice will be affected most and will be harder to control. Powdery or deep snow typically it helps with traction but not control issues. If you rebuild it then it most likely will be tighter. Can you live with it? only you can answer that because we don't know what conditions you drive in. There are lots of different types of ice and snow. As far as steering harder, yes some with the hubs locked in. The larger the tires the more difficult it may be to steer due to the contact patch on the road.

I separated this post and started a new thread for better coverage to get more answers/opinions on your questions.
