I have a t15 bolted to a 304 that has had better days and now I am left with what to do when I get it out. Is there a 4 speed that will bolt in or a floor shift auto? The wife would like an auto for sure but I would like a lower gear for mild crawling. Either way, what would be a nice upgrade?

T-18 is the easiest. That doesn't make it "easy" though. Have you tried the search function? Tons, and tons, and tons of info on this. If you have more specific questions by all means post them but you've left a very open ended question that one could spend all day typing about...

Nickmil is right about the T-18. It will bolt in place of the T-15 and will be nice if you can find the Open ratio one with the granny but they are getting scarce. For the auto, a torqflight 727 is the way to go unless you can find a waggy that came with the th400. Good luck on your serching quest.

I did the T18 four speed swap in my 75.. But know this : There are at least three types of T18. Jeep, Ford and Scout. By far the Ford tranny is the easiest to find and is the most uniform of the three.. The Scout tranny is probly the least desireable. The Jeep tranny is OK, but if you are going to rebuild it bearings can be a problem as Jeep used a few different thickness's.. My recommendation is to find the Ford T18 with the deep granny gear.. You also need a shorter input shaft, and a short bell housing, T150 I believe.. Other than that you will need to relocate the tranny crossmember and re-do the driveline.. You may also need an adapter for the T-case..

Novak has a wealth of information on trannies and swaps.. So does Advance Adapters

Just a heads up, Ford used different thicknesses of bearings as well. The change was on the input shaft only on all the T-18's. A thick (same as mainshaft bearing) that did not use an oil slinger and a thin that used the oil slinger. There are 6 basic case designs of the T-18 that I'm aware of and something like 12 different input shafts. Fortunately Ford used one basic input shaft length for the most of their run. Jeeps used a multitude as did IH.

Somthing to look for is a tranny already adapted and ready to be put into your jeep. When I decided to go with a granny 4 speed, i picked my tranny and started looking around. On this site, I found a guy selling a Ford NP 435 mated to a dana 300 with correct bellousing and input shaft for just the price of the adapter. Maybe I got lucky, dont know but I have found quite a few 4 speeds (420 465 435 t-18/19) that were already in a jeep so keep your eyes open.
