Jim, I remember talking to you about that now. If I had it to do again I would do some things different. My overflow tube points to the driver side, which is how my original (guess it was original) was. I am looking at some long skinny overflow tanks on ebay that look like they could mount next to the radiator, using the radiator mounts. But with the fresh air tube on the driver side, I think there would be more room on the pass side. Wish the overflow bung pointed that way. It will still work, just not as neat looking.

Greg: Mine is a small plastic one mounted next to the heater box and fender. Plenty of room. It looks like one of those FLAPS cheap generic ones, but works fine.

There's another aspect to this subject that no one has mentioned yet. The environment. If you have a system without a catch can, over flow reservoir, whatever you wish to call it, and you start running hot for whatever reason and puke some coolant out, where is it gonna go? On the ground, onto the fan blades to be thrown into the ignition system, etc. That's why at the drag strip they require a catch can to catch the overflow from the radiator. They don't give a darn about whether you are running hot, they care about not getting coolant on the track or all over the ground. That's as good a reason as I can think of for having one. To keep the coolant from leaking on the ground and the local wildlife from drinking it, from making slick spots on rocks, etc., etc. By the way, the one in my CJ-5 is from a VW Dasher. The one in the Race Jeep is an aluminum one purchased at a swap meet for $10. The CJ-6 doesn't have one YET as I'm still working on it and not driving. All my drivable vehicles have them.

I agree with Nick, that's the best reason yet. ;)

    Nick--Well spoken.
I'm not familiar with the VW Dasher, is it a newer model? How easy was the overflow to adapt? Where did you mount it? Pics? Please?

The Dasher is an older model, manufactured late '70's on into the 80's or even early '90's. A buddy had one he was scrapping and let me have whatever I wanted. That's the only thing he had that was useful to me.
It's an oval shaped unit with a single metal strap that goes around the plastic bottle and holds it in place. I've got it mounted on the passenger fender right behind the grill/radiator. Being as my Jeep is far from stock I'm not sure if the stock guys would have room for one as it's rather large. I'll see if I can get a bunch of pics together this weekend of various things. The overflow bottle, twin stick conversion for model 20 transfer, etc. I just have to figure out how to resize so I can post them. I have Irfanview on my computer, just a matter of the user figuring out how to use the equipment. ;) . Nickmil.

Greg: Sort of looks like mine. I know the PO got the shift boot from JCW.
