If you want, I will take a picture of how mine is clocked. It is a tight fit but works well and keeps the vacuum can away from the fan.

    Nickmil,

Thanks for the correction. I'll take your word for it. I personally stick with the '76 specification which is readily available.

I'd like to see a pic of yours Jim302. I tried every which way to get the vacumn advance to another location. It just seemed no matter where I put it there was something interfering with the protrusions on the cap.

Looking at those pictures, damn I was in a rush when I had the intake off. I got smurf snot every where.

As far as grinding, I don't think so. The problem with this clocking is the clearance with one of the locking tabs to the head. That is why I ground one of the tabs off the first cap trying to find it.

what year is your jeep? Is that a stock radiator? looks a little bigger than what i have in mine and i realy like the top hose on the side like that instead of centered. your fan must be a stock one also. the one on mine is i think 5 or six blades with 2 bigger gaps between a few spots.

Wound up going wheeling today for a good 7 hours, probly drove atleast 4.5 to 5 hours of it and it almost got hot twice. it ran a little warmer than i like but it didn't overheat. So i guess I need to run the t-stat cause it seemed to work better.

Thanks for the pics if I have time tomorrow i'll shoot a few and post them up. also my cap is different than the one you pictured.

Hers a pic straight over the cap. the cap you pictured shows you use the gm style coil cap cover it doesn't work on mine i had to order a different on.

What are you using for a timing advance? Looks like half of yours is missing.

I cut the (hat) part off for clearance purposes, its got plenty of advance with the different springs and weights that I put in it.

It's not factory or something I would sell but it works for my little rig. Someday I hope to work close to home so I Have more garage time to actually do things the "right way" but for now its all bandades and bubble gum but it all works and fairly well might I add.

If anyone has suggestions on how to better make it fit i'm open to suggestions, critisizm and even atta boys. I don't have a lot of money into it and plan to keep it that way. the biggest investment besides the purchase was the tires.

Heres a little flex shot of the old girl.

It's a 1970. The way the radiator fit before I got it re cored, if not stock, a very good fit. The previous owner was a good guy and seemed like he tried to keep the jeep as close to stock as he could over the years.

After I got the radiator punched out to 3 rows, it took a little finagling.

Does anyone have links to the items they ended up purchasing that WORKED!?!

Like many here I'm sure, I have ordered several products that claimed to be a direct fit but didn't end up working, so your experience and direct links are always appreciated for the uninitiated. (Yeah, its a Batman reference, get over it, lol)

There is some good information in this thread you will need - http://www.earlycj5.net/forums/showthread.php?111953-HEI-distributor-cap-1-terminal

Also - Most of the ways to ID and get an HEI are listed on this thread. I started with one from CRT Performance, learned from it, and can build them now on my own.

    http://www.crtperformance.com/crt/distributor/hei/hei-distributor-1-detail.html

Your other Option is to get one from Rock auto (for car models listed) and do a bit of re-curve work on the advance as mentioned in the tread above.

the cardone one of course, the cheapest;)

I put in the cardone one. buy a better coil and an extra module. they come with a Chinese module, but not the coil, cap or rotor. make sure they both are for odd fire buick. pontiac buick and GM seem to have their own particular idiosycracies and are different. The DUI ones seem to have a longer distributor housing and say they clear the intake without grinding some of it off. I'm pretty cheap, but your engine looks too nice to put a grinder to it. is your current points type distributor destroyed? Mine was and thats why I went with this.

I just got the A1 Cardone HEI in the mail from Autozone. I also ordered the cap and wires all at once (all three items were $169) But I have two quick questions:

    1. I bought a new OEM coil, does the HEI need a specific/specialty coil?
    2. The HEI came with a wire coming off the unit with a two prong clip. Any idea what that plugs into? Do I need one of the MSD type boxes as well?

Sorry for the stupid question, I am no mechanic.
