dana 30 axle shafts?

does anyone know if there is a difference in axle shaft length between 72-75 dana 30's and a 1978 dana 30? i've search haven't found anything on here.

They are the same length, spline count, and u-joint for the inner and outers. The one difference is if the '78 had disc brakes then the outer axle shaft will have a different diameter on the shaft where the dust shield presses on requiring a different seal to be used.

 

thanks nick. so the overall lengths are the same just the dust book is different? I have a 78 axle on the front of my jeep and i found a set a set from 72-75 for cheap and don't want to buy spares that don't fit. thanks for your help

 

also may or may not be a dumb question. with the dana 27 outers work in my 30. the cutlas automatic hubs that came on the axle leave something to be desired. but i have 10 spline lockouts that i know work. any help is appreciated. thanks

 

The Dana 27 hubs and outer axles are 10 spline as are the hubs. Your 30 outers are 27 spline so no they won't work. While the U-joint size is the same the outers are different and don't interchange.

 

i know the 27's have ten spline but i have 10 spline hubs and no 27 spline hubs except the cutlas autolocks. anyways i found some stuff in the garage that i'm sure i can make some drive flanges out of. appreciate the help though.

 

Just for clarification to anyone else who may read this thread, there are other differences in the outer axle shaft from the closed knuckle 27 to the open knuckle 30 than just the spline count. That's why they won't interchange. My earlier post wasn't very clear on that part.
