11" drum brake conversion

i bought all new brakes for my 59 , haven't installed yet but i looked and i think i need new 9" drums what are some good doner's for 11" or should i stay with 9"

 

1972-1974 Jeep CJ, 1967-1970 Jeep truck/ Wagoneer, some DJ Jeeps, some Jeepster Commandos, International Scouts using Dana axles. These are some of the backing plates you are looking for. Got mine off of E-Bay for 25 bucks. Bought drums, shoes, hardware kit and all other needed parts from Napa. O reily's and Autozone. Look on the Tech pages for all the part numbers and needed information.

Where you at in Washington? I'm in Spanaway. Never pass up a FC cabover jeep. You'll hate your self forever. When your on the web check out these sites. www.thefcconnection and the www.theforwardforum they both are deticated to cabover jeeps.

11" brakes or discs are one of the best upgrades you can do to an Early. I wouldn't sink a bunch of money into 9" unless going for a correct restoration.
Applications, what cabover said. Might also contact Daryl as he sometimes has backing plates and is in Washington.
Yes, where in Washington are you? Might have members close by that can be helpful or a source for parts.

 

I got my stuff from a 76 postal jeep. only mod I had to do was drill 2 holes in the backing plates on the rear, basically a bolt on application. very well worth it going to the 11" brakes, they will put you into the windshield if you jump on them now!

I know where Roy, WA is! Used to race at Ethel on a somewhat regular basis. Go through there every year on my way to Taidnapam Campground. At least if this is the Roy you go east from I-5 at exit 68....

 

You live in Roy were 10 miles apart. Glad to know you neighbor. Also did a disc conversion on the front. Brakes work great.

yes same ,roy just found a complete front end diff with 11" brakes with newer locking hubs and rear kinda like the old double twist style hubs maybe i'll put them on the wall . memories of my dad making me turn them in the cold snow, i guess you can say i was his automatic hubs back in those days

 

I am just up in Bonney Lake and almost always have 11" backing plates. If you need a hand let me know.

 

just picked some up tonite they had a full from diff with them and newer warn hubs
rears look newer all for hun bucks hope they will work he said its off a 56 willys pickup

 

Make sure they are Bendix and not Lockheed. Lockheed has the cam adjusters that go through the backing plate. Bendix have the adjuster on the bottom, inside the drum, between the bottoms of the two shoes. Bendix are MUCH better as they are self energizing and parts are readily available. Also, Lockheed's use a drum that fits on the back of the hub and Bendix uses a drum that fits on the outside of the hub. They do not interchange.

 

looks like the fronts are lockheed and the backs hav the cam adjusters can i still use the fronts and put the bendix on the back

 

i used early bronco backing plates on mine.

 

If the backs have cams they are Lockheeds. You can use the Lockheeds but they are nowhere as good as the Bendix. They will still be an improvement over the stock 9" drums but they are harder to get adjusted right and don't "self energize" like the Bendix do so they won't give as good performance.
