all Koenig Winches spool from the bottom from

Can't speak for the Koenigs but the Ramsey was (still is actually) available in versions that wold allow for either top or bottom spooling.

I think it is more application directed, like CJ vs Full size, my Koenig and my brothers Ramsey both have the line on top of the drum.
I have another Koenig in the shed that's a different model, it may wind the opposite direction, ill check tomorrow.

So I went out to the shed, crawled halfway under the Buick to check the other Koenig. Seems that Koenig makes (Made) a over wind and under wind version.
I know there are members here that can tell you lot's more.

My Ramsey REP8000 must spool from the bottom, otherwise the cable would bind in the fairlead.

fairlead posistion has alot to do with how it spools on the drum, my ramsey has directions on how to thread the line for either a top or bottom spool. know nothing about the koeing winches. the ramsey just has a hole straight thru the drum with set screws, pick which way you want it and thread the cable thru the hole the correct way for your choice.

The way it spools can also be directly related to your pto drive unit. For example, pto's that drive off the counter gear in the transmission (pto's mounted directly to the side of the transmission) often only drive in one direction. This means the winch must be spooled a certain way or you could have power out but no power in. On our Jeeps with the 18 transfer case the pto drive runs off the back of the transmission. Spool the winch the wrong way and if you have a 3 speed tranny then you would have 3 speeds out and only 1 speed powered in. The gears in the winch are typically cut a certain way to drive the winch a certain way, to spool the cable in over the top or under the bottom. To check the winch, simply turn the winch input the same direction the pto drive turns and check and see which way the drum turns.

I have both top and bottom wind Koenig's in my posession right now and a Ramsey that I think winds over the top. I'd have to double check that though.
I believe the top wind Koenigs that I have are the style with mounts front and rear and the bottom wind I have is the style that mounts on the bottom.

To confuse matters even more, if the drive is on the passenger side or driver side makes a difference as well.

    Ramsey made a 200L

Ramsey still sells the R & L gears that change direction of winch per PTO.
