My son saw this '59 CJ5 in his Uncle's Barn. Was "put-up" almost 25 years ago (1987 I believe) when it was retired from running trap-lines and general farm duties.

I had told my Uncle, YEARS ago, that I wanted first right of refusal if he decided to get rid of it. Fast forward to August 2010....

My 13 year old found it. Took pictures, researched the S/N, and negotiated with mom, over the next couple weeks........What is a Dad to do?.....:D :D

    So starts Garrett's '59 CJ5 Project.

I'll let the pics speak for themselves for the most part.

    Little update:

Started tearing down the motor. Cylinders look Ok, will do a compression test before I decide on rings. ButI have a cracked Exhaust Valve. Added to the list of repairs.

    Timing gear looks OK
    [IMG]

Spent most of my time lately cleaning, accessing damage and painting motor parts, (timing cover, distributor, valve cover, accelerator linkage, etc)

Set parts back on the block, running out parts of room....

Twisted off the first bolt of the project, (T-Stat). Drilled it out with 4 consecutive sizes and followed that with the 5/16 tap. Wala !!

I need to get a parts order going, exhaust valves, lots of gaskets.

Carb and Fuel pump rebuild kits are next.

    Carb:

    Fuel pump:

Cleaned up, showered and time for dinner.

Electric wipers will likely be one of the upgrades.

What needs to be done to the vacuum ports? Just cap 'em?

You could just hook them together with a short piece of tubing-----or put on a non wiper fuel pump, and sell that one.

    Being rather frugal,

    Check that Cheap,

    Check that resourceful.......

I couldn't find a c-clamp style valve spring compressor at FLAPS or Northern Tool.
NAPA wanted ~$60 to order one. YIKES !!! Well, this wood clap caught my eye as it sat in the corner of the shop.

    It turned into this:

    To accomplish this:
    Worked great.
And I can use the ~$60 to order parts to get this thing back together. :)

This is a very good build thread. The best thing is that the young lad will have the knowledge of building this jeep and the respect the vehicle deserves. Very good thread. Waiting for more.

Thanks Walt. He is a good kid if I do say so myself. :)

It is my hope that he doesn't get "Truck Stupid" , and get upside down and over his head in debt build something like his older brother (another good kid just "Truck Stupid") did.
