Would the larger brakes from a late 40's Jeep truck fit in my '59 cj5? I have the truck and was thinking it would be a cheap upgrade.

    What size are they?

    thanks

I have a set of 11 inch truck brakes on my '48 CJ2a. One disadvantage over the '72-'75 11 inch brakes is that they need to be manually adjusted, and they aren't duo-servo, but if you've already got them, I'd give them a test fit. The price is right. They work fine for my '48.

They are 11" brakes but are commonly referred to as "Lockheed" brakes. They use cams to adjust like the brakes you have now and are not self-energizing like the duo servo Ericm mentioned.
They will give you more stopping power than the stock 9" brakes but the self-energizing duo-servo would be even better yet. They are a bolt on though. I'm not sure how the parts availability is on the 11" Lockheed brakes is though so you might want to check that out before swapping. I think the drums are getting hard(er) to come by and may or may not be available new.

When I did my Lockheed brakes, the shoes/parts were available at Walck's. If I had to replace a drum, I would think it would be a good time to switch to the '72-'75 11 inch brakes.

Got it. Are parts any harder to find than the original 9" brake parts?

I think Walck's has all the pieces for both the 9 and 11 inch systems (including the drums)

My wagon stops quite well with the original 11 inch brakes. Adjustment is just a bit tricky but unless you wear them out by going through muddy water or a lot of sand they'll stay in good adjustment for a long time.

No, not different at all. Some people have commented that they can't get them adjusted well, so adjusting that type of cam system takes a bit more patience but is definitely doable with success. :)

I have an old '47 CJ2A that has truck brakes on it. They came off of a '54 pickup. Bolted on like they were made for it.
