Well, yesterday was the day I drove down to help my son "try" and tune his CJ5. Turns out that it is either a '78 or '80 and the carb is a 2bbl.

When I first got there we cranked it and checked for any and all vacum leaks and found nothing. Then we loosened the dizzy and slightly tweeked on it but only were able to get it to backfire - - -hahahaha

Put in new plugs and pulled the carb. He had picke up two carb kies and fortunately one of them worked. That was were I was no good at all because of my old hands and bad vision so he accepted that job and I started cleaning up some rat's nest wiring and just generally cleaning up the engine bay some.

In the process of cleaning up the engine by I notice the inline fuel filter had TWO connections coming out of the carb side of the filter. Of course the one on the other end comes from the mechnical fuel pump and then one goes to the carb. HOWEVER, this other line coming from the inline filter supposedly goes back to the gas tank - - - - - - so WHAT IS THAT ALL ABOUT????

Took most of the day for him to get the kit installed in the carb and thankfully my youngest son came by and helped him set the little float metering thingie that has the two skinny rods that go into the bottom section "Man I was lost watching that procedure - - LOL

Bottomline was that once we got the catb reinstalled properly it would idle just fine and not backfire upon accelleration - - - - so we were pleased with the day's efforts

I need to get down there in a couple of weeks and help him remount the gas tank and then he should be good to go for opening day of Bambi Season.

Thanks again for all the adivce and suggestions.

The extra line coming out of the filter is a fuel return line that allows excess fuel to return to the tank. This allows the fuel in the feed lines to circulate, help keeps the fuel cooler to minimize vapor lock.

For that extra line on the filter to work its best, the return barb needs to be straight up in the 12 o'clock position.

you mean stand the inline filter up vertically ?

what would be wrong with just using a normal inline filter with just in and out and not having the other line back to the tank?

No...horizontally...the return line should be on top, with the carb feed in the center...that's what he meant by 12 o'clock.

No, the filter stays in the same angled position, just spin the filter till the return line is the highest point. that way any bubbles and vapors rise to the return to go back to the tank. It also allows the fuel pump to continuously circulate fuel while the float needle is closed. That way the fuel is not stationary, soaking up heat.

I would keep the feature if you have the 3rd line to the tank.
I believe it was an improvement that helped stop vapor lock before they wised up and went to Fuel Injection.

If you don't have a 3rd line , then go with a single outlet filter

I've also heard that this return line can help reduce flooding while off road.
