drive line question

    Hi Im a new guy and need some answers. Im finishing up my cj2a build and need to order a rear drive shaft. Im running a sbc with a sm465 mated to a d300 t-case, this is puts me at 12" from out put yoke to pinion yoke and drive shaft will be at a working angle of 17 degrees. with the jeep in the air and the leaf springs totally decompressed my angle changes to 21 degrees. Question is, can I run a short drive shaft with U-joints or should I go with cv joint? I can get a u-joint shaft made for 100.00 and tom woods wants to sell me a cv shaft for 350+. trying to save cash if i can. What say ye?

    What is the actual u-joint angle? The angle difference between the transfer case yoke, drive shaft, and drive shaft to pinion yoke? That is more important than what angle the drive shaft is running at. Example, it could be running vertical as long as the u-joint angles are ok or could be running at 0* angle but if the u-joint angles are too much you will still have issues.

    I'd measure the u-joint angles then look on Tom Wood's or High Angle Drivelines web sites for info to make the decision. I don't like to run more than 4* U-joint angles to minimize vibration/u-joint issues. some get away with up to 7* but I've run into issues under load with that much.

    What Nick said, and also make sure your transfer case output and your pinion shaft are within a degree of each other, unless you run a double cardan in which case you would point the pinion shaft straight at the transfer case output..

    thanks guys for the replies. I ended up ordering a cv shaft from tom woods. one of the most expensive parts on this build!

    Hey guys wanted to do an update on the drive shaft issue. I did order and instal the shaft a few days back. Very much worth the money, Tom Woods staff is very helpful and got me the right part free of shipping charges. did take a full week however. I ended up getting a "shorty" cv shaft. It came in at a whopping 12" long. Quality is there and is fully servicable, grease zerks every where. The flatty is officially 4 wheel drive and the v8 in this thing is scary powerful. hope this little review is helpful to someone in need of a custome drive shaft.
