I searched the forum and I find that many people choose plastic glovebox inserts as opposed to the cardboard original kind.

Ok, So I understand that part, but I am trying to find either an original or new good quality reproduction of the actual door that goes on the outside of the glovebox, not just the liner.

My jeep is a 1955 CJ5, does anyone know if 55-71 doors were all the same?

Does anyone have a photo of their original 55 or so CJ5 glovebox door they can post?

    Thanks in advance!

Not only 55-71, the glovebox door stayed the same right through to the end of the CJ in 86. So any aftermarket glovebox door you find for a CJ will work. Any Omix-Ada dealer can get them, they run about $15. If you prefer OEM parts, used originals pop up on Ebay quite often.

I have a repro (from an MD Juan body) and an original circa 1964. The repro does not have studs for the latch assembly or the arm on the inside. The single, large hinge is different than original with two small ones and new holes would need drilled. The original has a push button latch that works, I may or may not have the key, but is missing the arm. It has been painted several times but seems to be in good shape underneath. Let me know if you are interested.

Not all glove box doors are created equal.

The original first generation doors had 2 studs on the back, 2 for the arm, and small latch hole. They also had a lip turned at the bottom 90 deg. that kept the door from swinging all the way down. It kind of acts like a shelf.

The second generation did not have the lip or the studs and used a kind of flush button latch like the blue one above. Good luck finding a good one of those latches

The MD juan door does not have the studs, lip or same latch hole opening. It's made with a piano hinge tacked at the bottom. The good thing about the MD juan door is that you can use the MB/GPW locks, and there are repos of those in supply. The bad thing is that the hinge setup doesn't allow the door to fit worth a Da** on the dash

    The plot thickens!

I knew it would get less cut and dry!

I am considering just making a metal cover for the glovebox and claiming it is an original "glove box delete" plate.

Meh, the all look the same when they're closed. If it's not a concourse restoration I would use the Omix Ada/ MD Juan repro and not worry about it. I mean, it's only 15 bucks, if you don't like it you most likely haven't gone in debt to buy it.

Yeah, that is probably what I will end up doing.

Concourse restoration will never happen with this Jeep! I am just hoping to bring it back to have some fun with and try not to do many of the things that the previous owners have done to it.

Some things just make me cringe when I see them.

One example is... I have 25 or so 1/4 inch holes drilled in the dash to make a speaker screen so that a really bad speaker could be mounted behind it. So that is the type of thing I am working with. At least the radio they chose was a stock cherokee AM-FM Jeep radio which I am sure offered a really great sound!!!!!

I happened to have all three type doors and I went with the first generation type and reemed out the hole to take a MB latch. If you can get the blue one from above, that one is the easiest to make work and best functioning

Here's the thread on what I did:

Got mine from Willys-Overland in Toledo. Shipping them is ridiculous for what they cost so if you need something else...

They are $1.50 each. They worked on my '60 CJ5. Don't know if they ever changed.
