I believe my 1962 CJ-5 has different gear ratios under it.
The rear axle is a Dana 44 with these numbers:
    A 18419
    43-8
    5.38
    U.S. Pat. 2018188
The front is a Dana 27 I believe with these numbers:
    27A
    292
    081377 2A
    U.S. Pat. 2012188
It does not have a plate hanging off any off the bolts. The service plug has a
    "W" on it.
Can somebody tell me what I have. I discovered the problem when I engaged the 4WD the first time and the right rear was dragging.

Front axle is a 27A as you noted.

What are the tooth counts on the gears in the front axle?

It would be most unlikely that they are mismatched. 5.38 gears are quite common for the D27 axle.

Haven't counted the gears yet....just figured this out yesterday. The rear axle came off a separate frame I got when I bought the Jeep. The Jeep had a modern rear end in it but I had just bought all the brake parts for the original sytle rear end so I put the spare in.

what is the rear end that came in it?

    the most likely gears for the D27 are 5.38, 4.88, 4.27, 3.73

There should be numbers stamped on the gear, shouldn't have to count teeth, IIRC.

So you removed a Dana 44 with 5.38s and put another one in?

I'd still bet that the front axle has 5.38 gears in it...

No... I removed a rear end that had 11" brakes and put in the Willys rear end I had as a spare. I now have a Dana 44 in the rear with 5-38 and the front is a Dana 27

You still need to determine what the gear ratio is on the front axle to determine if they will match. Follow Sparky's instructions. Either count the teeth on the ring and pinion or look for the numbers stamped in the ring gear to determine the front axle ring and pinion ratio.

That would be why I asked you what axle came in it. I knew you put the 44 under it, you already said that.

I have no clue what the rear end I gave away had. If I understand correctly I can pull the cover on the front end and the the pinion gear should have the ratio stamped on it or I can count the teeth.......

Correct. It's also a good excuse to pull the cover and change the gear oil. ;)

The ring gear should have a number like 12-41, do some math and you have your axle ratio.

I pulled the cover today and discovered I have a 4-11 front end. Talked to my buddy at "generation Jeep" in Cairo , Georgia he thinks he may have a used 4-11 for me. Thanks for everyone's input.
