I have a D20 in my 76 CJ5. I have a D18 sitting on my garage floor I'm trying to get rid of. Is it worth converting my D20 to 2.46 using the d18 gears? I'll need the sliding gear from a Bronco , but have a d18 already.

I think it would be worth it since I dont think you will be able to get a hole lot out of the D18. And I may be wrong since Im in no way an expert, but I think you can just swap the innerds from the 18 into the 20. I dont THINK you need anything from the bronco case if you already got a complete 18 sitting on the floor. I have heard though that you will need to grind a little bit on the inside casing of the 20 to the get larger gear to fit inside the case so it dont rub. I have googled that question alot and found quite abit on it before I got my 300. Hope it helps.

You can put all the 18 guts in a 20 case. I did that one time when I built an 18 TC to go behind a T15 trans. But then you'd have an offset rear, which won't work on a 76. I believe there is a way to swap justthe low range gears, but I don't remember which parts are needed.

It does require a sliding gear from a Bronco D20 to work. Be careful as there is some erroneous information floating around out there as to which part # gear that you need. There are two different gears available with the same tooth & spline count but different angle to the gear teeth. Also, not just any d18 gears will work, but I forget where the difference is. Spend a little time looking at this chart and you can figure out exactly what it will take. I used to have a Scout with a d20 and gathered up everything I needed except the Bronco sliding gear. I could never find one until after I sold the Scout...

If your D18 is a pre 1954-1/2 (1-1/8" intermediate shaft) forget about swapping parts.
You say 2.46 ratio so I figure its post 1954-1/2 with 1-1/4" intermediate shaft.
If your D18 is a post 1965 with 4" bearing bore index I am interested... so PM me.
