A friend just called and he has a Dana 44 rear out of a 69 Commando that he wants to get rid of. Questions:

    1. What is the WMS to WMS width on this rear end?

    2. Would it be 30 or 19 spline?

    3. Are both axle shafts the same length?

Verify that it is in fact a D44. Many if not most of the Commandos through '69 had a D30 rear.
That's not a typo. Surprised me too the first time I heard it.

Maybe check with the American Jeepster Club board to determine spline count and WMS distances. Just don't mention you're considering swapping it into a CJ ;)

If it is in fact a 44, my '68 had one, they came in two flavors. Tapered two piece 19 spline centered, and flanged 30 spline centered. You need to find out which one it is. There were also some rare 27 spline centered also but can't remember if they were tapered or flanged axles. I don't remember the actual measurement but the the dimensions were the same as the centered narrow track 44 found in '72-'75 CJ's. You would have to move the spring pads to put one under a CJ, but that's about all. Nickmil.

It is a 44. Thanks for the info. I was thinking of putting it under my 80 CJ-5 and sticking a Detroit electrac in it. Any of you have experience with the Electrac?
