You want to weld it yourself? If you are going to have someone install it, they may want to bend the tubing themselves.

Yes I planned on welding it myself, and adding some additional bracing to it.

im considering the front also...how would the seatbelt tabs be angled..or could you drill through the tube and put a grade 8 bolt through it(have yj seatbelts for the 2a)..oh..for this use...is the dom worth it?

I would not drill through the tube and put a bolt through, you would start to crush the tube if you tighten it. Most people drill the tube then weld in a piece of round stock, drill and tap that and bolt your seat belt to it.

The split design with a sleeve seems pretty cheesy to me. A one-piece hoop would be a lot stronger.

Have you seen this kit? http://www.rockhard4x4parts.com/cj5-55.html

The bolt on design is not necessarily inherently weaker than welding, and it is also affordable.

Yeah I have looked at the rockhard cage before, not a fan of how it looks with all of the clamps and such. Gonna call around Tucson and see what I can get one built for, that way it is exactly how I want it.

    Thanks

With the 6" long sleeve and a full penetration weld it should be as strong, or stronger, than a one piece.
I used their front hoop kit. Nice stuff.

I've never been a fan of sleeving a piece of tube for a cage in the basic safety compartment. The termination point of the sleeve creates a stress point that can shear at that point during impact. A single piece while distorting easier, will typically absorb more energy during impact without shearing (if the cage has a sound design and proper materials are used to begin with). When I was involved in stock car racing and short course Off road racing we considered the cage as somewhat sacrificial. We built them as strong and as surviveable as possible of course, but also built them that in a severe crash the cage absorbed the energy and not our bodies or less important, the basic chassis/vehicle. Modern vehicle chassis are built with this same philosophy in mind (crumple zones, etc.)
I'd rather have a single piece of tube distorting around me and absorbing the energy of the impact vs. shearing and becoming a spear to impale whatever it hits. I'm not an engineer and this is just my opinion which that and $7 will get you a cup of coffee (or whatever it costs these days):)
